I don't think he's at WSM any more, from what I read. He's a great guy. One of the best!
I was listening last night when the NOAA weather radio signal cut in and interrupted the normal country music programming. Will have to give a listen and see what's on now.
Eddie Stubbs is broadcasting from the WSM transmitter site tonight. The Opry House and the Opryland Hotel are severely flooded. You can see pictures on the Grand Old Opry website. I have seen estimates of 6 months to a full year before the Opry House and Opryland Hotel will be operational as all the electrical service is under water and WSM's studios at the Opryland Hotel are totally flooded, including their massive collection of 78 rpm records. Eddie Stubbs is talking about the mess on 650 right now.
Hopefully, someone was smart enough to digitize those 78 RPM recordings and put them on an external hard drive or on some off-site storage system.
WSM is one of the few stations with operational studios at the transmitter. In my long career, I've always had an emergency studio at one of our transmitter sites in the market.
In every single case, the emergency studio had to be pressed into service ... due to hurricanes, STL system failure or other emergencies which caused the shutdown of the main studio.
Caught WSM off the air prior to 6:03AM EDT. There was a foreign speaking station there...if it was Spanish, it was soft spoken...perhaps a religious program. Any ideas??
I also noticed them off about the same time this morning and also heard that Spanish station. I just read on the Nashville site that WSM's studio at the Opryland Hotel was NOT totally destroyed as previously reported. However, it will be quite a while before they can assess the damage and move back there due to all the damage at the hotel. It sound's like 3 months or more... Meanwhile, they are using the studio at the transmitter site south of Nashville.
