WSM

All the country legends you want can be downloaded on your I-pod. If you want trivial information, try google. Shut up and play the music, please.

Of course, most people who listen to WSM probably think I-pod is a new type of laxative for senior citizens available through Medicare.

I listen to WSM. I am 39. I have a buddy on this board that I communicate with away from this board he is 30 something. Also listens to WSM. And KWKH 1130 Shreveport, la. No not everyont that listens to WSM is near the age of death. Hate to dissapoint you. And I definitly know what an IPOD is ;D and I even know how to load my records into my computer and then transfer them to said IPOD ;D :D

No, not everyone gone from WSM was fired. Jennifer Perry chose to leave, but I worked with her at the time, and I believe her decision to leave was out of a general MISERY with the way WSM was operating at the time. I loved what I did, as did Jennifer, but the air around the building was filled with complaining, whining, and negativity like I've never seen anywhere else. That's enough to make anyone leave. Not to mention that working for a company that doesn't invest in and value what you do is the worst working environment there is. I communicate quite often with people who have left WSM/Gaylord, whether on their own or at Gaylord's hand, and I've not heard anyone say they miss the job. They might miss the people, as I do....but I would never want to step back into that environment for a million years. WSM sucks the life right out of you. The people who have left WSM have returned to "normal" people....no longer negative, drama-toting people. We've been released from WSM's drama, negativity and misery. We're all better off.

I've heard a lot of the stories about how morale was down over at WSM. However, as the guy who "recruited" Jennifer away from there, I never heard her say a negative word about the management, and I admire that.

WSM did can a lot of good people during those years, though, which was unfortunate. They still have some good air talent and I wish the media community and community-at-large appreciated the station more than it seems to do.

Can't you guys find another topic to discuss, instead of this back and forth stuff over WSM. This topic is getting old.

Get over it, some folks like WSM, some do not. For the people who enjoy it, let it play on. For those who don't, roll the dial, there are 50 plus other stations in this market to b**** about or love them to death!

It's like in my opinion, I've always thought that Scott Shannon and Coyote McCloud were the most annoying jocks in this market to listen to. But I realize there are many others who enjoyed and like them, so I went and found another station to listen to where there was talent I liked and I didn't run around and grip about Shannon or McCloud.

Another example, it's like food, some of you may like McDonalds, and some don't. I hate McDonalds and will not eat there, but some of you do, and that's cool. Thier Big Macs make me sick, but some of you may love them.

Get my point???????????

It's time to end the WSM drama and find something else to discuss!

Amen to that brother! Scottwmro is right about this. There is no sense in carrying on this discussion. For those who think WSM is crappy, nothing will change their minds. For those who think WSM is the best country station in America, nothing will change their minds.

Let's change the subject.
Like let's start talking about The Wolf. Cumulus and that station is an easy target.

well i suppose we could discuss the lack of an oldies station for a while... ;D

The original intention of starting this topic was the future of WSM. We can pretend all day and night, "Gee, isn't it swell WSM is one of the last stations playing music on AM and I love the skyfade and they shouldn't change a thing". My question was, "Why didn't anyone move the format, and a good one at that, to FM?

The reality is things change. We used to get around with horse drawn wagons but today we have cars. We used to make trips across the country on rail and to other countries on steamer ships, today we have air travel. We used to shop downtown but retail has moved to the suburbs. We used to depend on AM radio for wide area communications but we now have the internet and satellite delivery.

WSM is one hell of a radio station. But AM is no longer the best delivery system to reach the audience potential.

Rob,
That’s a good question. National Life (former owner of WSM-AM and TV) purchased WLWM-FM (now know as 95.5, the Wolf, WSM-FM) in 1968. One would have thought that was the reasons for the FM purchase. They anticipated the rise of FM as early as the late 60’s and the programming should have been moved to the FM, or a simulcast of the AM & the FM over a period of years, until they could get the programming up on satellite. They could have made the programming available for FMs, market to market.
The FCC has made a statement that it realizes that AM is a dying part of the spectrum. They say that the only good it’s for is ethnic programming, which will move to FM within the next 5-10 years in the medium and small markets. Lots of us (including me) own AM stations, but AM is a struggle to sell, unless your WGN, WLW, or WABC, and even these stations are not the cash cows they once were and we sometimes wonder how much longer we will be here.
As we move towards 2010, digital will take over. Digital AM does not work, period. The bandwidth is just to narrow. Neither IBOC, nor DRM is any good in the commercial AM band spectrum.
The AM DX guys, like myself, realize it’s just a matter of time, and AM will be a dead horse. It’s really not as fun to DX, like it once was. Consolidation killed a lot of it, with the same satellite programming on from market to market. In addition, AM skywave has changed over the past 15 years or so, and it’s harder to receive distant stations these days, than it once was.
Only time will tell, as lobbyist and the government decided what is best for the consumer and the demands of the majority of the consumers.

Now let's move on to another subject matter folks, AND NOT THE LACK OF OLDIES STATIONS MR. JULIAN! That's another subject matter that has been way wore out, much worse than the topic about WSM. Hell, it's been discussed for over 2 years on this board! Get over it and move on to the future. WHIN will never be the same again, period. It can be moved towards the metro, sold for a BIG price, and go to an ethnic format. I see that happening if Sparkman gets his share of the money he wants for his 50% of the station.

Do remember that WSM has NOT always been unique among 50kw clear-channel operations. For the vast majority of its life it was a full-service station much like WGN, WCCO, WBZ, and WSB among others.

The FCC has made a statement that it realizes that AM is a dying part of the spectrum. They say that the only good it’s for is ethnic programming, which will move to FM within the next 5-10 years in the medium and small markets.

I guess the question is who else would take over the AM spectrum. There are no other services clamoring for access. About the only other service that would like that band are the hams. (many of whom can still tell you it was stolen from us back in 1921!)

One wonders if there would be a point to creating an "amateur broadcasting service". Gradually move the viable stations into the 540-1220 part of the band. (as the un-viable stations there go under and open up gaps) Then, allow unlicensed broadcasting in 1230-1700 as long as you keep your power below 5kw and your emissions within the 1230-1700 band. Not much chance of making a profit, but it could provide a legal place for those with the urge to "pirate".

(of course, many pirates are in it to thumb their noses at the government and would eschew a legal unlicensed band...)

Who under the age of 65 listens to WSM or AM for that matter.
Probably, it's just a promotion tool to get geriatrics to come to the opry; sort of like the circus barker in front of the ten.
