wsm?

I should start out by saying the "nashville" in my name does not refer to the nashville your thinking about.

If I didn't say that, my question would probably sound dumb.:]

I will be in Memphis next week and I was curious if wsm am 650 is audible during the day or at night?

I haven't been to Memphis recently, I was sad to hear that another sports station knocked country off the local dial.

I'm hoping I can pick up wsm while I'm there.

While I'm at it is the urban oldies station still on AM.

I think its in the 1400's? I like the station a lot.

Nashville (the one we're thinking about) has notoriously bad ground conductivity, so their 50 KW clear channels sometimes don't cut through like Chicago's or WWL. In Memphis, there is a 640 that is 50 KW in the daytime and may offer a little challenge to clean daytime reception.

Chances of hearing anything on 650 daytime is ZERO for the reason Rob mentioned. WCRV, our local 640, is on at night with 500W. I live fairly close to the transmitter site; they're strong here at night. You may have a shot further away, though.

For what it's worth, the 640 in Memphis *can* be heard on a car radio here in Cheatham County (just north of Nashville) during the day. Admittedly I'm about 30 miles from the WSM tower -- and Memphis can be *heard*, but only with an enormous amount of interference!

So it's probably worth trying for WSM, but the best you're going to be able to do is know that you heard it. You aren't going to be enjoying the programming.

so is that Nashville Arkansas?

The closest to an Urban Oldies type station would be WDIA 1070. They are currently operating at reduced power (5 kw).

With the low dial position 640 has a pretty strong signal in nearly all of the city at night even at such low power.

I've picked up 640 in Southern IL (the Marion/Carbondale area) in the daytime. They used to advertise that they reached into 7 states. (TN, AR, MS, MO, KY, IL, and AL) I know that once I get West of Jackson in the daytime 640 usually covers up WSM on my car radio.

Even prior to WCRV (WMSO at the time) moving to the 640 frequency, you really couldn't pick up WSM in Memphis during the day on most radios.

I could get it very well on my Panasonic RF-220 shortwave radio and used to enjoy listening to the Waking Crew, but I never got even a faint signal on any other radio, car radio or stereo receiver.

There was the Juice 680 AM. That changed to an adult standards format in 2000 after WPLX-AM 1170 was sold and changed formats. I don't know when 680 changed to a sports format.

Its "water under the bridge" but in fact, 640 is drastically short-spaced to adjacent WSM even taking into account summer-time worst-conditions to winter best conditions soil conductivities. This confirmed by field studies, unfortunately after-the-fact. That's another story, but in any case WSM signal any where around Memphis is not what you would want to listen to for anything other than verification.

That good ground conductivity around Memphis is definitely biased north-south. I've gotten 640 easily in Jackson, MS and about 30 minutes south of St. Louis with some hash… That's quite a chunk of I-55!

I seem to recall having minor troubles with WSM at night around Memphis but as others have noted, in the immediate metro WCRV covers it up.

Labor Day weekend 2007. It became a sports station at the conclusion of a Tennessee Vols football game. It was a Fox Sports affiliate at first, but it later turned into their current ESPN affiliation.

Bott has pretty much taken over radio here in Nashville to the point that there would be no need in trying to pick up 640 out of Memphis. I know, I know, I just took the fun out of "DX-ing." ;D Maybe I will try to see if I can pick up 640 in Memphis. I'm in south Cheatham (Pegram) myself.

And for the Memphians, WSM is online, too! ;D
