WSMN fires Ploss

In a story mentioned around the world, like in the London Daily Mail, WSMN 1590 and 95.3 in Nashua
has fired thrice-weekly talk host Dianna Ploss who filmed herself criticizing workers for speaking Spanish. The station said they believe in free speech but doesn't want hatred or racism.
On her Facebook page Ploss has been criticized for her actions. Some defend her. Some say they agree with some of her political views but felt she was rude.

The station, which just put its FM translator on last week, could have lost listeners and advertisers by keeping her on.Petitions to remove her had thousands
of (online) signatures.

Isn't this a tiny brokered station....where she pays them for the airtime? (Rather than the station paying her?)

Yes.Perhaps she got advertisers for the show to pay herself back.So WSMN is saying,"Your money is no good here."
Even if all the hosts were doing dollar a holler, some may well have chosen to drop their shows rather
than be associated with them.
They have oldies and classic rock shows on Saturdays; talk shows etc

If a tree falls in the forest....

she is a 3 day a week afternoon host, on a 770 watt AM in Nashua NH, 770 watts on the upper end of the AM band has a coverage area of about 20 miles tops.

who the bleep cares......

I didn't know the station existed until now and I am in, according to Radio Locator, in the "distant" 50 DBu contour maybe 15 miles away from their stick.

Made news because of her behavior (and politics). Now the station is famous for all the wrong reasons.More press than "we got an
FM translator last week"

The whole focus by the media here is wrong. Language is not race-exclusive. I could learn Chinese or Swahili if I wanted to. I used to be able to manage in Quechua. I am not Black, Asian or Indigenous.

The bias there is simply a refusal to understand that most American families came here speaking a language other than English and by the second generation were linguistically integrated into our society. Whether the first language is Gaelic, Polish, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Tagalog, or any of hundreds of other tongues, that "birth language" is usually used throughout life when appropriate.

I've told several times the story of speaking Spanish with a colleague at a checkout in a store in LA and having an "old white hag" literally yell at us and tell use we would never get ahead unless we learned to "speak American". That is a sign of ignorance, and until they make being a polyglot illegal, I'll continue to speak in the language most appropriate for each situation.

Yes, the station is right: it is hatred... but more accurately, it is ignorance.

I like that you said this in a thread about Dianna Ploss.

Here's a woman berating laborers for speaking Spanish in conversation. Now, let's say that she has the same mindset as your old lady, and thinks that they won't "get ahead." I mean, look who's giving that lecture: A woman so toxic, she can't pay a peashooter radio station to air her talk show. What the F is Dianna Ploss ever going to do for anyone to help them "get ahead" ever again in her lifetime?

If she's not independently wealthy (which, dammit, she might be if she has the free time for this shtick), I hope universal basic income becomes a thing in her lifetime, because, really, what public-facing entity would give her money to do anything?

There's a 90 watt LPFM called WMNH listed on 95.3 in Manchester, NH, it looks like a broadcast radio station run by a public access cable TV channel. I haven't been up that way in a while, so haven't heard it, or WSMN's FM translator.

Even at the relatively low powers they run, wouldn't WSMN's 95.3 Nashua translator and this Manchester LPFM be short-spaced on the same frequency?

I don't think radio-locator has it listed yet but WSMN's translator is W237FA with maybe 250 watts via FCCInfo site
https://www.fccinfo.com/CMDProEngine.php?sCurrentService=FM&tabSearchType=Appl&sAppIDNumber=1781499

Radio-locator does list WMNH and shows signal range...and a search for Nashua says WMNH-LP.is only 16 miles away. The WSMN website has a popup message saying
"WSMN 1590 WSMN 95.3" is no longer associated with Ploss.

Looks like the WSMN translator is directional away from Manchester.

A LP has no protections, even from a translator, and even then a LP has a Maximum radius of 5.6KM/ 3.5 Miles

It didn't make the news it did on TV but I haven't heard the Andelmans on radio since their June debacle. Any station --like BZ-- have them on?

PG hasn't run on Ch 4 or 38 since mid June when Dave Andleman resigned and (show host) Dan took over at CEO; don't know if Dan has been on radio since then (perhaps letting things cool off a bit before proceeding with Dan.A clip on youtube from a Ch 4
newscast mentioned Dave resigning and "by the way Ch 4 pulled the show off the air as soon as we became aware of the media posts".

The PG Facebook page is still running restaurant reviews/features.It and/or their website may still say the show is on weekends on 38 but that may not be the case.
Lately WBZ radio has had interviews with a different restaurant reviewer or at least someone who mentions openings and closing, Boston Restaurant Talk's Mark Hurwitz.

I think station says it is (on Facebook etc).I'm not in Nashua so I can't tell.
A tweet by George Russell @mrtalkradio from the first week of July says "it's official" and has a logo saying WSMN AM 1590 FM 95.3
