WSM's Amazing Story

In just a little over a year John Sebastian has taken WSM from being the loser in a 3 way Country Battle in Nashville, to #3 overall 12+, ahead of both WSIX and WKDF. He is without a doubt, one of the handful of Great Program Directors in the BIZ. Whatever Format he works in, HE WINS!!! Congrats and a Big Tip of the Hat to you, John. WELL DONE.

Sebastian should be made Lead Program Director for the Nashville Cluster and given a chance to work his magic on the complete stable before he is snatched away to recreate his amazing performance elsewhere. I'd love to see what new format he'd come up with to turn 106.7 into a successful frequency.

What a Suck-up!
I don't suppose "his" success has anything to do with the 1.3 Million dollars spent in advertising by Cumulus.

Great posts on John Sebastian, who is also one of the biggest ego maniacs in the business. But that might be his driving force. But luck at his history and the blood trail he leaves behind wherever he goes. It's all about John.

Congrats to John and the staff of the Wolf. Now let's see if he can repeat in the next book. If he can do that, than he's really that good.

Look,This guy ain't special, there are probably hundreds of PDs who could have dome what he did and not make enemies out of most of his airstaff.I'm sure they are all crossing thier fingers at The Wolf that he gets offered another job or gets promoted into another city so they don't have to deal with his "snake oil salesmanship" anymore

> Now if your WKDF what do you do ?

You are slipping in the ratings

Do you fire people,

Hire new people Like John Sebastian

Or change to a new format

Because this is the closest down WNRQ might get for quite some time.

Classic rock might just be the thing KDF needs.

What is the fascination on the this board with KDF changing formats to classic rock? It's not going to happen, at least not anytime soon. This time last year, it was WSM-FM that was going to change fomats to classic rock or classic hits, according to several people who post on here and you see how accurate they were. Maybe this time next year, it will be WSIX that everyone will fascinate about changing formats from country to classic hits, classic rock or whatever the flavor-of-the-month format some of you will fascinate for.

Re: WSM's Amazing Story?

I thought WSM DID change formats...or are Rod Stewart and Quarterflash considered Country now? Which brings up another question. How much "mix" can they get away with before they are removed from the country panels at Billboard and R&R.

First, congrats to WSM...they had a hell of a trend. That being said, last time I checked it was just that - a TREND. Matter of fact, it was the first trend, not even weighted.

I recall WKDF beating us in a BOOK a few years ago. We received a rear-view mirror from Citadel's top Programming guy, Scott Maholic. It had a note that read, "here's looking at you!" ....WKDF hasn't beaten us since.

I wouldn't start celebrating the defeat of a heritage country station just yet.

Why would that be a consideration to anyone? Trades should REFLECT what stations are playing. not attempt to dictate it. John has always cared more about getting listeners than meeting the industry's expectation. You can't get extraordinary results by doing the ordinary.

Re: WSM's Amazing Story?

Well said, Ed. Gnashvegas obviously works at WKDF, based on earlier posts. Maybe that's why they're so lackluster right now, even their own employees don't understand how radio works.

Re: WSM's Amazing Story?

Ouch. I would be happy to work for KDF as I am a fan of the legends, but you are about 170 miles off base. Please feel free to let me know if there are any openings there. My speculation regarding the panels comes from having worked for a reporter that got dropped because of the lack of currents on the playlist. But perhaps you would like to give lessons on how radio works to ignoramuses like me. And for the record, I have known Mr. Sebastian for many years and his record speaks for itself. Geez, moderator Bob. Lighten up. You too, Ed.

Mr. Sebastian

Great for Mr. Sebastian. How he was able to get some success out of a Cumulus stations is a miracle. The fact remains that he still works for a company that doesn't have much respect from its current or former employees.<P ID="signature">______________
