WSNE, The Lost Videos

Here's proof that there are some things ONLY the Program Director would save.

Just-found on VHS tapes I had squirreled-away during my 82-84 stint as PD when WSNE was @ Outlet Broadcasting's 111 Dorrance mothership:

1. TV spot we aired during the Spring84 book, seeking to position us as lots-of-music-but-less-in-your-face-than-Pro-FM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88oPeNAaMvw

2. THIS was torture: We were OFF-THE-AIR for about 4 days, when our tower line blew out. TV12 news coverage includes interview with the late Mike Sands (our midday DJ) and the PD (when my hair was a different color): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWIriNOE65E

Good God. After watching clip two I realized that Channel 12 had No set! Deborah horne now works at KIRO TV in Seattle http://www.kirotv.com/station/1868150/detail.html . That was a bad time for WSNE. Poor Mike Sands. He lost his life in a tragic way. He seemed like a good guy. Holland you look like you were 15 years old. lol. Thanks for the clips. It's always a pleasure.

Mike was a real gent.
My whole on-air staff then was great.
John "Morgan-in-the-Morning" Morgan (now a successful professional speaker)
Mike did middays.
Talented Jeff Shade, freelancing in LA lately.
Market veteran Bob Hollands at night.
Patty Costa overnights.

FOUR people in the news department...on a music FM!
I just saw ex-WSNE News Director Bill Thompson last week in Washington.
He followed me to WTOP, where he anchored mornings for 7 years.
Then I kidnapped him to USA Today.
Now, he's speaking to Africa and Asia every night (morning, their time), on Voice of America.
Dyana Koelsch went to TV10.

Just a pup.
32 at the time.

Also from HC's VHS grooveyard, a real treat, this time archival WPRO: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KcPxEFeLbeA

Holland,
Great stuff. I can't believe I don't remember WSNE off the air in 1983. I usually always remember when I have less work to do.
It was great to see Mike Sands again.

Thanks, Holland, for the link!

Dunno how many folks realize that Mike Sands worked at WSAR before moving over to Providence. Lived in a town barely across the state line; married a local girl and they had a nice family. He also was part of a folk-group that appeared around the area. They performed some of their own stuff....only one I remember clearly is "Hard Times For Cotton Mill Girls".

I'll spare you me-looking-like-Tony Orlando on late-70s Jerry Lewis Telethons!

But I AM coming-across lots of archival stuff, as I rummage through a pile of VHS tapes I haven't dusted-off in years.

I occasionally review gadgets and gizmos on "Into Tomorrow with Dave Graveline" (www.IntoTomorrow.com), a weekend call-in show about Consumer Electronics. Dave, based in Miami, is my client.

This week -- the first full week I've been home in 2007 -- I'd set aside time to install Honestech VHS to DVD 3.o Deluxe, a new product I saw introduced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Vegas in January (http://www.honestech.com/main/vhs_to_dvd_30_deluxe.asp?path=Graphics & Video).

THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR FOR YEARS. Until now, oldies-but-goodies like these videos were trapped on VHS. Or I couldn't get 'em from my almost-10-year-old videocam to my less-than-1-year-old computer. This product does that "handshake," and easily creates DVD/VCD and converts cassette/LP audio to MP3 and CD. You can also use this product to convert video for use on Sony PSP, iPod, and other devices.

Because tape and vinyl deteriorate, we've got to either digitize old stuff or lose it forever.

Amusing to see in that WSNE story a shot of a pair of AKG K240 headphones. I have a pair that I bought back in the 70's and still use them all the time. Great headphones.

Fun video, thanks for posting that. Any footage of Channel 12 weathergirl Irene Rodriguez hanging around? ;)

Holland,

That video clip was amazing! My mom and I went there that week in '76 to see the ships but we got caught in that fog...no refund either  . I remember Gov. Noel also doing some airtime on the then-secular WARV...

Re: RE "Thanks for the great video clips."

Those clips were really a treat, even if I didn't grow up in the area or listen to the radio station. If you find more stuff in your personal collection and post them on youtube, let us know!

Excuse the morbid curiousity, but what exactly happened to Mike Sands?

Mike died in a car crash, in the late 80s.

If I'm not mistaken, he was on his way to a remote broadcast when the accident took place.

THIS will bring-a-tear-to-eye...

Ladies and Gentlemen, the immortal Salty Brine, as profiled on WJAR-TV's PM Magazine (I'm thinkin' 1979):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZvb2Cz6R8Y

Among those interviewed, then-WPRO news director Frank Daly; whom I later worked with again, at WTOP/Washington, where he was the voice of the NBA Bullets (now the Washington Wizards), whose games we flagshipped. When I was in DC last week, and hooked-up with some ex-WTOP-ers, I was saddened to hear that Frank had recently passed away.

Swansea. Pulling out of business, I recall it as a bakery, on Route 6 in Swansea in a very small car and was broad-sided by an individual driving something much larger.
I believe he used his real name during his time at WSAR but left that out earlier because his family still lives in the area. I remain in touch with one of the other members of the folk-group (of which he was part) and he's very happy to see Art has not been forgotten!

One thing that bothered me immensely with that Lite logo that didn't get changed until I was MD there was who approved the "5" as it just didn't fit with the rest of the logo, made it look sloppy and off center

interesting how Salty and Larry had to share a mic. I wonder why they did it that way.

"Pro," as generations of listeners called this special station, was a stand-up for years; downtown on Mason Street, and later when we moved back to the transmitter on Wampanoag Trail. It sure wasn't the fanciest studio I ever worked, but it may have been the most comfortable.

WPRO was my first stand-up, and the three stations I worked on-air afterward were too. Standing really helps that sort of speaking.

And it wasn't just the mic we shared. The team vibe that Salty, Larry, Jimmy, Gary, The Cherub, and I shared with our enthused director and dapper captain was warm. Now, that seems quaint.
