WSOH changes calls

WSOH-FM/New Washington, IN with a translator in Middletown, Kentucky has adopted a more Air1-friendly set of calls: WARA. The station now identifies as "88.3 WARA New Washington, 104.7 Louisville".<P ID="signature">______________

The new call letters make sense. WSOH were the call letters of 88.3 FM when it was owned by the Seventh Day Adventist's "Lifetalk Radio" network. I haven't heard a new ID on 104.7 FM or on the 88.9 FM translator in New Albany, IN. I always hear the Monterey, CA station ID on those two frequencies.

I didn't think translators had to give their own IDs... only the ID of their parent station...

Here in Wadsworth, OH, we have a K-Love translator W219BT 91.7 FM that airs the "KLOV-Winchester" legal ID at the top of the hour.

Anybody know the official text on ID rules for translators?

Yep. You can take a look for yourself here. However, this is the text of the law:

"Translator stations must be identified by the licensee by the following means:


By arranging with the primary station whose signal is being rebroadcast to identify the translator by call sign and location. The identification must occur 3 times daily: once between 7 AM and 9 AM, once between 12:55 PM and 1:05 PM, and once between 4 PM and 6 PM. Stations which do not begin operating before 9 AM must provide the identification at the beginning of the broadcast day. The licensee of the translator station must arrange for the primary station to keep in the primary FM station's file (and to make available to FCC personnel), the call sign and location of the translator station. This record must include the name, address, and telephone number of the translator licensee or his service representative to be contacted in the case of a malfunction of the translator. See 47 CFR Section 74.1283(c)(1).

OR
by transmitting the call sign in Morse Code at least once hour. See 47 CFR Section 74.1283(c)(2) for additional requirements for transmission of the call sign in this manner. "

WJIE does something similiar to the first requirement, but instead of "W230AK Louisville" it's always "WJIE Okolona, Louisville with translator downtown W230AK 93.9 FM". It seems like if you're going to announce that you have a translator over the air, it'd make sense to do the actual legal ID.<P ID="signature">______________

History of 88.3/104.7 FM New Washington/Louisville

History of 88.3/104.7 New Washington, Louisville"


October 31, 1994 - April 1995: Lou Smith Ministries from Jeffersonville, IN signs on 88.3 New Washington, IN and translator 104.7 FM in New Albany. Call letters for 88.3 was WJYL and W284AD for 104.7. From a studio in Jeffersonville, Lou Smith Ministries programmed a dynamic Christian CHR format identified as "Joy-FM." The station signed off in April 1995 due to signal problems and lack of support.

May 1995 - July 1995: Lou Smith Ministries signed on the station with Satellite Christian Country format.

July 1995 - October 1995: Lou Smith Ministries switches the format to Adult Contemporary Christian Music from Salem's Morningstar Network.

January 1996 - December 2002: Lifetalk Broadcasting purchased the station from Lou Smith Ministries and placed their Inspirational/Talk satellite network "Lifetalk" radio. By 1997, the 88.3 FM Call letters changed from WJYL to WSOH (With Sounds of Hope). The Middletown translator at 104.7 was added in 2000.

December 2001 - February 2002: WSOH-FM 88.3/104.7 was sold to Evangel Schools, (owners of WJIE-FM) who simulcasted WJIE's programming for a few weeks.

February 2002 - May 2003: Evangel changes WSOH to a satellite Spanish Christian network.

May 2003: Educational Media Foundation buys WSOH-FM 88.3/104.7 and airs the CCM network Air 1 radio.

February 2006: Educational Media Foundation changes 88.3 FM call letters from WSOH to WARA.
