WSPA-TV losing CBS affiliation to WYFF

Too late to edit, but I’d think it’s likely CW moves to 7 so Nexstar can keep carriage on streaming providers like YouTube TV, DirecTV, Hulu Live, etc. 62 shares spectrum from RF 11 with WSPA-TV since they sold the spectrum back in 2018.
 
Wow that is crazy! CBS has been on WSPA for as long as I can remember. As the song says "the times are are a changing'! What's crazy is how close to the last minute this has taken place. NexStar will really become news focused outside of CW programming from the looks of it.
 
As network programming becomes less and less important, I wouldn't be surprised in some markets if one TV station ends up with all the major networks on one channel (in the various HDs of course.)

I'm curious how WYFF will handle the early and 11pm newscasts. Will they simulcast on both? Since they haven't used their NBC affiliation in their name or logo for a long while, I could see them doing that.

Something tells me that two stations in Jacksonville FL do that - share the newsroom and simulcast.

The other side of this is that the networks are becoming steaming services. I stream CBS rather than watch a local station.

Nexstar is empowered after the FCC approved their merger with Tegna.

Perhaps they think the audience won't notice or care. But this is simply a move about money, and keeping their money in house.

People don't watch stations or networks. They watch programs. If the programs they want are someplace else, they will find them. Especially if we're talking about sports.
 
I know I'm outside their demos, but I couldn't even tell you of ONE show that airs on the CW. I barely watch anything on Fox, but if I do, like you, I typically get that on Hulu.
 
Sad times for WSPA. I have watched this station on an antenna.

I don’t know what will happen to WYCW…it could become a dumping ground for the lower tier syndication…maybe it could try to get MyNet from WLOS 13.2…there’s not going to be much use for it now though.

WYFF will probably simulcast most of their news across the two channels but they could put a 7pm news on one of their channels. Inside Edition and ET could move to 4.3 now. I feel certain they will get Family Feud now from WLOS because Hearst stations have picked it up in other markets and they have another channel to put it on now.

I could see wycw going ion or some other programming service. I would assume 7 will have to pull shows off of 62 to fill gaps. Obviously the 7to9am and 10-11pm news will move to 7 . Nexstar said they would expand news on 7 but they already have news 4 to 8pm. So I guess the cbs evening news slot will go local and maybe the 1230 half hour will be the expansion. Plus your Carolina will probably be expanded into a second hour in the afternoon. So after the morning news wspa will have 10 to noon and 1to3pm to fill during the daytime. CBS will actually be on 4.3 and should simlucast most news programming on that signal. Based on 4s coverage so far they are not doing any exclusive local shows on cbs 4.3tv. Just 7 days for hurst to find programming to fill in the times cbs does not program. Way easier for nexstar since 62 has programming for 7 to add.
 
yeah...most of the chatter about this will come from those like me who grew up watching dave handy and walter cronkite every night on channel 7 on a b/w tv. i agree with others. people watch shows and will find the cbs shows just like any other show. people in general just hate change.
 
The odd part of this is the markets where they are losing CBS they are moving to another station that will have two affiliations. Why? It cannot be money because I cannot see a small market station paying two affiliation fees.

Depending on how much they expand their news I don’t think it will take much syndie from WYCW (except for late night). I could see the their news going 7-10am so if they do that and if they add an extra hour of Your Carolina and a half hour of news each at 12:30pm and 6:30pm that’s only two hours to fill before 8pm.

I could also see them pulling some of the syndicated shows from 62 to fill overnight slots. 62 has the rights to Seinfeld, The Goldbergs, Last Man Standing, Andy Griffith, and some other things like Pawn Stars.

There are similarities, but CBS got a definite upgrade moving to WWAY from WILM-LD. I moved to SE NC in 2020, and I am still glad the move happened because WILM's signal has gotten worse and worse every year since then. I really only care about CBS for the NFL nowadays, but at least I can watch it reliably. WBTW in Florence is hit or miss.

Because it has more to do with the CBS-Nexstar relationship souring than anything else.
