I live by EXITS 20 and 17 off of 84 in a town called Hamlin and I can ick them up.
______________

Service contour is a protected contour. Listenership is good to this contour, and usually a number of miles further. As an example, NYC stations' service contours fall short of harriman & warwick, but you can hear them in Middletown, newburgh and Poughkeepsie.

Location...Location...Location

WSPK's antenna is in an excellent location.

A nice sharp hill with not much high terrain around it, and up on a decent sized tower. It might surprise you to find out that WSPK is only running 7,400 watts from the location. It just shows you what a good site it really is, to get a 50,000 watt equivelant signal at only 7.4kW.

Re: Location...Location...Location

WSPK while clear in most directions has excellent coverage. A good balance of ERP/Elevation, while still providing building penetration.
Now WPDH is a better example of nothing around it - 4.4 kw from way up in the air. You can hear it everywhere. 99.3/Ellenville is another example of how height works. Its why you can hear Joe Daily & Lou Brown throughout Orange county, in many areas beyond the predicted service contour - with all of . All with 115 watts. (But, building penetration becomes an issue)

99.3 is a really funny station with an amazing signal. I've listened to it on Rte 23 between Great Barrington and Hudson, and it comes in well.
Yet when you are in downtown Ellenville, near the old KLite studios (remember KLite?, I don't know if the current incarnation studios are still even there or not), the signal is really bad due to some bad multipath.

I haven't been out in that direction in YEARS, but I do seem to recall you can pick up WNNJ pretty good around there.

Interesting topic. I live in Vernon, NJ, a town in the Northwest corner of Sussex County and I pick up K104 like a local station in most areas of the town. Same for WPDH. 99.3 FM comes in well when you go up the mountain on Rt. 515 in Vernon. Also, question about 101.5 WPDH. I thought I heard that they have 50,000 watts of power but according to radio locator, they have 4400 watts. Anyone verify this?
______________

Re: Location...Location...Location

WPDH is a Class B station. The *standard* for this class is 50kw ERP @ 150 meters HAAT. Once you go up in HAAT, the ERP must drop, to maintain the service contour in the same place. Remember, the higher you go, the further out to the horizon you are, and fm signals will travel further. Hence the reason to reduce erp.

WPDH's antenna is 469 meters above average terrain. Thats why the erp is 4400.

WSPK is 381. (also a B)

Ellenville is an A, and a 3kw a at that. 115 watts at 496 meters is the same as 3kw at 100 meters.

Re: Location...Location...Location

99.3 did have some multipath years ago, with a different antenna and transmitter. There is a good amount of shadowing when you drive in & out of ellenville, and even down 52 towards pine bush. It was improved significantly in 93 by Eric Straus.

Even though there is some bleed from WBAI I can get a pretty decent signal from 99.3 WFKP (and 97.3 WZAD) as far south as Northvale, NJ which is in extreme Northeast Bergen County.
______________

Surprised? K104 has one of the best FM signal ranges I know. Iv taken it well into PA as well as pretty far out Eastern LI, most of Northern NJ and up to Albany. It has a decent signal in NYC too in the car...but that Brooklyn Radio Pirate gets in the way...

(Anyone else remember their jingle from a few years ago...."Serving NY, NJ, PA, CT, MA and an itty bitty piece of VT.")

I pick up the signal ok in SE Nassau County, have to play with the antenna a little bit, but it generally will come in on good radios. The signal is generally better on the north shore of Long Island than the south. Towards the south shore goes a little east of the Nassau?Suffolk border (can be further on a good car radio) Back when I was in college from Sept 2000-May 20004, I was able to pick K 104 from my dorm room iN STONY BROOK, which is in North Central Suffolk county about 50 MILES EAST of Manhattan, basically directly across the sound from bridgeport. I remember picking the station right around the LIE in the Medford area as well, which is about 9 miles SSE of the campus, which is almost 70 miles from the transmitter
