WSRQ 1220 AM off air

Are they back on? 106.9 was on but 1220 was off all day. I thought with AM on FM the translator "had to" follow the AM so if the AM was off (dead air) should'nt the FM have dead air as well?

Maybe after, what, a decade or more, they are actually moving to the new directional tower and transmitter site up they have had a CP for off Palmer for years... I think their time is running out to have it up and running...I still cannot believe they have gotten away with being non directional off Bahia Vista & Beneva for years and years with NO fine from the FCC...Also sounds like the FM translator has upped it's height or power... comes in all the way to SR 64 off I-75...

Technically you are correct that an FM translator associated with an AM station is required to re-broadcast 100% AM programming. However, in the case of a daytime only AM, the translator may continue operating 24 hours which means the translator is originating programming after sunset when the AM signal leaves the air. If for some reason the AM signal is off the air any other time due to technical reasons, the translator may continue to operate as though the AM is on the air since the AM is still licensed and authorized to be on the air.

As long as the station is operating under the authority of a Special Temporary Authorization, the station may operate indefinately under the terms of the STA. I. E., if WSRQ's licensee continued to file for and receive FCC approval every six months to operate with temporary power levels, TL and antenna pattern, the STA authorizes WSRQ to operate legally and no fine from the FCC is warranted. The station is operating legally.

They have been 24 hr with extremely reduced NT power for decades...

I was gonna kind of say the same thing. Even if they're daytime only, they're probably authorized for nighttime operation at extremely low power. (Just like WHOO-AM in Kissimmee/Orlando). If that's the case, then they're technically "on air", and the FM translator can continue re-transmitting as usual. That would be my best guess.

FM translators are allowed to cover up to the fully authorized and licensed 2mV/m daytime AM service contour or 25-miles from the AM tranmitter site, depending on whichever is greater, 24 hours. Even if the parent AM is a true daytime only station, meaning it signs off the air at local sunset, the translator may continue to operate. This is the reasoning behind allowing translators to re-braodcast AM signals in the first place - to improve or add nighttime service via FM translator.

I attempted to edit once I caught a slight error in my above post. So here is how it should read.

FM translators are allowed to cover up to the fully authorized and licensed 2mV/m daytime AM service contour or 25-miles from the AM transmitter site, depending on whichever is lessor, 24 hours. Even if the parent AM is a true daytime only station, meaning it signs off the air at local sunset, the translator may continue to operate. This is the reasoning behind allowing translators to re-braodcast AM signals in the first place - to improve or add nighttime service via FM translator.
