WSRQ-New Owners Etc

I was browsing the FCC site and noticed that WSRQ was sold and had only a few short months to build a permanent antenna site. Did this ever happen ? Are they still on ?

I'm out of town so I can't hear them.

Just Curious

???

WSRQ is still on the air; you piqued my curiousty, so I've tuned them in and it's almost 6:30 Monday evening and it's a local talk show with two people discussing sports and fast food.

I'm thinking their antenna may still be at the temporary location on City Island, Sarasota; otherwise if they were at a more inland location I doubt I would be able to receive them up as well as I am in St. Petersburg.

WTMY operates diplexed with 1450 on City Island, not WSRQ.
You are exactly right and after I hit "post", I heard 1280 give the call letters WTMY and realized that I had made a major error....... but the modified mode has no provisions for delete,so I just deleted my message manually and logged off, thinking that would do the trick....... obviously, I have a lot to learn in reference to how to delete a post.

Does anyone know how?

Bsck on topic...............

At any rate, Here in St. Pete, I can't tell if WSRQ 1220 is on the air; when turning my radio to the s.s.e. toward Sarasota I am hearing an interference filled signal and I did hear a possible Sarasota phone number (355-xxxx) given out, but cannot positively i.d. the station as WSRQ. I'm thinking what I'm hearing is WSRQ........ that said, I could be wrong twice within two hours!

It's on the air, operating under STA from a site East of 75 and south of Fruitville Rd. They are working on a plan to build a permanent site. I hope knowing the new owners the FCC will go along with whatever the new plan may be.

Actually, I believe 1220 has been using a wire antenna just NE of Beneva and Bahia Vista for years (maybe decades)..The original building is still there and when Ted Rogers and Carroll Newton owned it ( early to mid 1970's) it was WQSA and the FM was 102.5 WQSR... Prior to that is was called The Surrounding Sound of WSAF...If I'm right...Pretty much big band, beautiful music station...I think that Sarasota county took the land that had their 2 tower daytime directional towers on and used it for a ground level water tower...( seen off Beneva) They (1220) have been using a cell tower almost next to the old original bldg. The also recently got a translator for FM (106.9) but I forget where it is... CP was to have a new 2 tower array east of I-75 and south of Palmer Blvd, but I haven't seen anything there when last traveled in the area...

Another note... the original 102.5 was WYAK in downtown Sarasota... That tower from the early 1960's has been the same tower that has been on City Island for decades ( at least very early 1970's when I worked there) and now has WDSV & WTMY on it and used to have the old 106.3 FM (WSPB-FM / WMLO / WSRQ) on it as well..

OK.. I think today's history lesson is over...and is correct...kinda out of it tonight...In the hospital...UGH!!!

To help add to the confusion:

1220 is still operating from the wire off the cell site built on the same property as the original 2 towers ( since removed over ten years ago). Along with the wire hanging off it for 1220, there is 96.5 and a new 98.9 that is simulcasting the 1220 signal. Above the tower, is 106.9 also a retransmit of 1220. (Yes, above, apparently wanting to tempt fate with lightning)

I would be surprised if they complete the CP out east, with all these LPFMs, what would be the ROI?

1220 has not been on that cell tower for quite a while. They have a tower off Palmer Road, several miles east of I-75.

The signal I receive is strongest at that tower.

It's not at that tower.

Look for yourself, there is no long wire there.
Yes, that is the tower.
If you look close, you can see 106.9 looking out over the top of the tower.
That is where I've experienced 1220 the strongest.

If it is no longer there, then 2 questions:
1.) How long has it been gone?
2.) Where is it now?

I will go over there, now.

Yes, you are correct. The transmitter location has changed for 1220.
It is off Debrecken.

It must not have been very long ago, the FCC still has it as a CP with the license as Birky. Plus my own observation still had it on Birky, as well.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

Well the last time I went to the Birky site area, there sure was a lot of bleed over on 1220 AM...leading me to believe they were still transmitting from there... also haven't seen their TWO towers off Palmer yet.. when did this all occur, as their AM signal still sounds like it did off the old cell tower... lousy... if they have moved, then they become legal for the 1st time in what a decade or longer...

Several things were leading me to believe, until last night, they (1220) were still using Birky.

1.)FCC website
2.) my own triangulation, and
3.) 970 fading at the site.
970 faded today, as usual, as I drove passed the site. Whatever is it, the interference that is appearing as an overload, is still there as the 1220 signal is moved.

That is indeed the 106.9 and 98.9 site, the 106.9 antenna is mounted on the standoff. When I did that it greatly improved the coverage.

The am is East of 75 and South of Fruitville off of Palmer Ranch, the tower is very hard to see unless you know its there.

I noticed the difference with 106.9 right away. As I type this, I am off of Summerfield Pkwy. in Lakewood Ranch. When it was side mounted, I had trouble hearing it at parts on University Pkwy, now it makes it to 70. You are short-spaced to the East because of WZZS and that station was playing havoc with your signal.

98.9 will have the same problems in the South as a result of interference from WBCG.

My error with 1220, was the interference I run into as a front end overload when listening to 970 around Birky. I have a Visteon HD jump suction cupped to the windshiel and in line with the auto antenna. When I am close to a station, I can generally have the local signal push through and hear it on its 1220 frequency. It was bleeding over enough to lead me to believe it was still at Birky. As I went to Palmer, the push through was stronger on Debreken, near Palmer, proving it had indeed moved. I don't get to that area very often.

Why was the CP moved rather than rebuild the original Birky 2-tower site?

OK So 106.9 is on the standoff. Who uses the single bay Shively on the far leg? And the single bay on the right hand leg?
