I admit I lead a quiet life, but I enjoy looking at the FCC web site and information about different stations. I noticed recently that WSRV has had several applications to move their tower site. One took them to a C2. Now there is one that moves them closer, but they remain at 100kw. What's going on here? What is Cox planning to do with this latest application? How will it impact coverage and when will it take place?

I think you have some confusion over the applications you see. There is no application to downgrade to a C2, that application for 50kw is for a back-up/auxillery transmitter. The application filed in January does seek to downgrade to a C0 and with a transmitter closer to Atlanta.

Rick, do you know if the application for a new main site is for an existing tower?

The new location would be a nice deal for them; almost as high as the current monster tower, slightly more wattage and significantly closer to Atlanta.

After reviewing the application it seems like it will be for a new tower 15km west of the current site. This is a downgrade to C0 with an HAAT of 305m using 100kw. I would say this would improve coverage in the Atlanta market some but I don't see a major improvement coming, then again 97.1 has the biggest signal in Georgia now.

As an outsider, it seems to me Atlanta has more rimshot signals than any other major market. A few of the signals are big & huge but there are a bunch that only cover portions of the market- is that reality or myth?

That is reality,: 92.9, 94.1, 94.9, 96.1, 99.7, 100.5, 101.5, and 103.3 are really the only sticks that can claim to cover the ENTIRE METRO STEM TO STERN LOUD AND CLEAR.

You forgot 88.5, 90.1, 91.1, and 98.5.

I could hear 97.1 coming in clearly in Greenville, SC when I was passing through there a few weeks ago on vacation. You usually have no problem getting 97.1 in the Mountains.

106.7 has moved from that tower, and 95.5 is next. I wonder what Cox will do with that site.

If the housing boom were still here then there might be some intrest in the land for another neighborhood.

If analog TV goes away in a couple of years WUVG will go away too.

Maybe littlejohn could tell us more about the WFOX tower and what it's lifespan was projected to be.

I believe that site is actually on the grounds of a ranch for boys from broken homes; can't recall the name.

The tower is huge and has an elevator to the top. I believe it was built for the long haul. But of course the structure is not the issue; it's stations being able to improve their signals by moving closer to Atlanta, something not forseen when the tower was built for WFOX and WYAY in the '80s.

The property abuts Eagle Ranch in Hall County. When it was built, it wa the tallest structure in Ga, although someone has since built a taller one in south Georgia. It's been there roughly twenty years, and opught to last another 50 without any problems, given regular maintenance.

Since when does 100.5 cover the entire market?

100.5 misses just a tad to the northeast, it's directional protecting WSSL in Greenville. You got to figure CLear Channel likely isn't going to be receptive to an offer to move that signal and allow 100.5 to expand. It does a better job of coverage than it has any reason to, though... and you can't beat the location.
