WSRY 1550 Elkton: Stronger?

Spent some time today listening to 1550 just to see how they sounded and find out what they are up to.

I do not care at all about Reach FM. They are good at what they do, but its not my kind of music. But I noticed a couple of things. The signal is strong again in Newark Delaware. For awhile, it was like the ground system was non-existant. And on a rainy day like this, nearly all of the signal would just drop into the earth around the towers. But today, it was reaching the 100% mark on my Grundig radio. And I live on the far side of Newark, heading toward Pike Creek.

The audio was good. Not just for AM. But for either AM or FM.

Does anyone know if they have been doing any work on the equipment or facilities. If so, it was certainly with other people's money since Steve Hare owns it!

Also, strange that before when simucasting WXHL in Chrstiana, they used WXHL-AM. Now, they are sticking with the WSRY call they used during their ESPN days.

They put in a so-so signal into central Delaware during the day. But what a waste of RF. WXHL and its multitude of translators gets out just fine in New Castle and Cecil Counties.

As cheesey as they were, I still miss the old WSER, which is what WSRY in days past. It wasn't much of a station back in the 80s but it was Elkton's local station (everyone always ignored WOEL on 89.9 since it was/is a church run Christian station).

I did afternoon drive for awhile in 1968/69 on WSER. Small, but fun operation. We were Top 40 at the time and did a decent job of it. It started the radio casreers of many people.

I know the last time I was past WSRY, the field behind the station was turning into a jungle. I also worked there on the air in 1969 and did engineering for them thru the 80's and even then, there was no ground system! There is no change in their signal here, its equal with Charles Town, WV. They, like WNRK, where one of the few directionals who aimed their signal west, so they had a good signal into Lancaster. Maybe they just needed to do some maintenance on the place to get it back up to snuff, which I'm sure is a very high priority with the people who own it now (cough, cough, hack, hack)
