WSTH Columbus

Have they gotten rid of the airstaff? The morning with Quinnster and What's his name was DEATH!
I wished they would bring Mason, Belinda K, Diamond Jim, Randy Daniels and the little ZIP POPPER Don ???? back! "REDNECK and Proud Of IT!"

I think I remember how the station ID for the original South 106 went...

South 106, WSTH, Alexander City, Columbus Phenix City, Auburn Opelika, LaGrange, The South!

There was a Montgomery in the legal ID too. In fact, I had heard rumours about South 106 (or Rooster, the critter de jour that day) switching their country format to WBFA and moving an urban format to the powerhouse transmitter to better battle Foxy and to provide programming a la WZHT (Troy/Montgomery/Columbus) to the northern reaches of the antenna (Auburn, Alexander City, La Grange). The overlap would cover a lot of miles but would be negligible population wise. Imagine a simulcast sretching from Ashland to Ashford, West Point to West Alabama, Greenville (AL) to Greenville (GA).

I think the lame country format on 106.1 is a vast waste of a strategically placed high powered transmitter which could much be better served. It would have been an ideal location for a Classic Hits format switch two years ago (and theoretically could still be). But those ratings less than 4 aren't going to hang much longer in Columbus for a class C station.

I'd forgotten about Montgomery in the ID. They may have had Newnan in there too. I have some tapes somewhere.

Besides the songs being over repetitive, especially the classics, "Quin & the Cow" in the morning leave a lot to be desired. Not to mention the live PM drive host who shows up on occasion.

If my memory serves me, WSTH-FM once had a Translater (W293AD) at 106.5. That may have been pre-Clear Channel, (Solar Broadcasting). I also believe that WDAK 540 once sported the WSTH calls in the early 90's or so and was also a simulcast. WSTH-FM never dropped the "FM" for some reason. All in all, it made for a lengthy top of the hour ID. "WSTH Columbus, WSTH-FM Alexander City, Columbus, etc.," not to mention the occasional mention of the W239AD. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe for a short time, there was also an AM in Alex City that was part of the "South 106 Radio Network." IIRC, the calls were WXTH. The Columbus translator, as I remember, had its antenna on the roof of a doctor's office on Wynnton Road, just down the hill a piece from the former Sunny 100 studios, where I worked. All of that stuff took place WELL before Cumulus or Clear Channel were in the picture, when the stations were still owned by Allen Woodall Jr. (Solar Broadcasting).

Yes, WXTH was rather short-lived as I recall. It was originally WRFS AM 1050, part of one of the most entertaining, although at the time well under-powered Top 40 combos in Alabama - WRFS AM and FM Alexander City. Back then the coverage area of the daytime AM exceeded that of the FM. I was very happy the day I found out WRFS-FM had upgraded to 100 kw (or at least Grade C Status) for about 4 days until they switched to country as the original South 106. There was another station in Alex City, an AM on 1590 which played an urban format. However, that station has long since vanished, and WRFS (AM), now WBNM after several format changes, is all that remains geographically in a once thriving town.
