WSVM (Valdese) Now Running Interesting Promo

WSVM (AM 1490, Valdese) is running a promo which invites listeners to tune in at Noon on Friday, Sept 19 for an announcement regarding the station's future. This comes about a month after a failed deal of WSVM's sale to a local Hispanic group whose plan was to broadcast religious Hispanic programming.

This jist of the announcement from GHB in Atlanta:

"On Friday, Sept 26 at 12Noon...1490 WSVM Your Hometown Station will become a thing of the past."

In the quote above, they audibly stretched out (or it could be interpreted as an emphasis) "a thing of the past". They could be going dark, but my gut is this is a "teaser" to maybe a traditional standards format? As far as I know, GHB has abandoned the Timeless Favorites from ABC on its North Carolina stations, except WSVM. I think WSVM remained with the ABC-delivered format pending the recent sale that fell through. WAME is now classic country but from Jones (or whatever the network is now called). Oldies 106.1 gets their oldies from Jones, too, I believe. And what about WAVO 1150, Rock Hill. Is their standards from Jones?

On this morning's Trading Post, I believe the hostess is "giving away" some secrecy or mystery regarding the promo/liner stating, "On Friday, Sept 26 at Noon...Your Hometown Station WSVM will become a thing of the past". For listeners thinking the station may actually be going dark, all doubt should be removed by listening to today's Trading Post. The hostess is asking callers to comment on how the signal sounds, because a new transmitter has been installed. I thought this was rather humorous -- but interesting! Apparently GHB is going to spend a little money on WSVM. The old transmitter was at least 40 years old.

One thing they have needed to do for years is to have a new transmitter site. I did a little engineering work for them years ago and discovered that their tower is almost exactly a quarter wavelength @ 1490 away from that metal water town of Valdese tank behind the station.

I am sure that has some effect on the directionality of the signal.

That old transmitter is more like 56 years old, based on the information I found on the internet, at least the design is. There is even a yahoo group dedicated to preservation and restoration of these old beasts. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Collins20VTransmitters/

John, I didn't realize the old WSVM tx was that old. Did they sign-on with it in 1961? I've also heard the same thing about the affect of those water tanks near the tower.

In my DREAM world (and don't all of us radio junkies have one) where I had enough $$$ to buy any station I wanted and do anything I wished, I'd love to buy all of Burke County's radio stations. Then I would move the WSVM tower/tx a little west toward Morganton to particularly help with the night signal in Morganton. I would simultaneously move the COLs of WSVM to Drexel and WMNC-FM's to Valdese -- this would satisfy the FCC with neither Morganton or Valdese losing a local broadcast service (Morganton still has WMNC and WCIS) and Drexel would gain a local broadcast service. Also, WMNC-FM currently gets a city grade signal over Valdese so the tower could stay. But, again, that's all in my radio dream world.

The orginal WSVM transmitter was an RCA BTA-250 in 1961, but it was replaced by the Collins unit a short time later. The RCA BTA-250 wound up in Albemarle at WZKY, which at the time was 250 watts. WZKY later went to 1000 watts and today has a newer Gates 1 unit, but the old RCA transmitter is still in use as a standy by. My company owned WSVM for a time in the 80s and I remember the Collins 1 kw transmitter could use up new tubes very rapidly! It was difficult to keep it property tuned.

So.......What was the big announcement???? I was out of town and didn't hear it.

They went to 50's\60's oldies. Sounds sorta like WIST (1240) did back in the late 60's- song, jingle, song, another jingle, song, sweeper\jingle, song, ..... Just might work with the older demos up there. The processing sounds a bit pushed, probably an effort to be as loud as possible. Whoever's voicing the liners (I'd bet it's in house) sounds pretty good, but desperately needs a mic processor.

GHB didn't sell? I've updated Wikipedia saying it was sold to Spanish-speaking owners, but after seeing the change to oldies I've updated again, except for the owner. Someone enlighten me so I can make sure Wikipedia is right.

Nope- it didn't sell. The buyers didn't have the required cash to consummate the deal.

One would think that GHB would have investigated to make sure the prospective buyers had the cash before doing any of the paperwork. Something like having them put the down payment into an escrow account.

But wait, that's not the way business is done anymore is it? It's all done on faith and junk bonds. No body has to have money, they just have to promise to pay it.

Hey I am gonna go out and buy me a radio station this afternoon.

(now removes tongue from cheek and relaxes a bit)
