WTAM: ABC and Fox News Radio

I mean to say something about this yesterday, but forgot.

Listening to Bill Wills on WTAM Wednesday morning, and he had on-air interactions with both Sam Donaldson of ABC (in re: the CIA-Karl Rove thing-politics) and with Jim Slade from Fox News Radio (FNR).

Will this dual actuality thing be common until the end of the ABC contract?

I suspect it will.

When digging through WTAM-related articles for the blog, I landed on a Billboard Radio Monitor quote of WTAM's PD, Ray Davis...saying FNR starts on WTAM in August.

As noted, WTAM locally anchors 24/7, so you'll only hear the FNR reporters in the local casts, or like you heard, on "W&C".

What about Paul Harvey? Personally, I don't listen to good 'ol Paul too much any more but he does have a following, a lot of people love him. I guess they could just pay $ to keep him on...any thoughts...

Paul Harvey...GOODBYE!

Paul Harvey goes bye-bye when WTAM drops ABC, for any number of reasons, not the least of which is ABC's requirement for WTAM to at least clear the inventory for one of its news networks in association with Harvey's own inventory.

I wonder if Salem's WHK will pick up Harvey? Salem talker KTKZ/1380 Sacramento already picked him up in that market...when Clear Channel's KFBK dropped him.

Re: Paul Harvey...GOODBYE!

From what I understand Paul Harvey is seperate contract from ABC News, so there is still a chance that WTAM will still carry Paul Harvey when they switch over to Fox News.

Re: Paul Harvey...GOODBYE!

After Clear Channel announced the mass exit from ABC and new deal with Fox, ABC began to change deals for other services. Certain stations with Harvey are no longer required to carry inventory for another network. (The harvey spot load is bad enough)

Re: Paul Harvey...GOODBYE!

WTAM MIGHT be able to work a seperate deal with ABC to keep Paul..but when Harvey finally departs this life, what happens to ABC as a network entity? Harvey is likely the only reason it still exsists..

ABC has extensive radio news resources without even bringing up Paul Harvey.

Today.

Of course, with many large market Clear Channel-owned stations bailing for FOX News Radio in the next month or so, and more importantly, with the questionable status of ABC's radio operations, who knows?

It's an open question whether ABC's radio network operations will be affected. Bob Iger and company are all but shining a bright "for sale" light on the ABC radio operations, but I don't think anyone has the answer on what happens to the radio news network. It's still somewhat broad in scope, even now. (Just think of how many ABC News affiliates you can pick up on the AM dial alone, in your home market!)

It could be possible - just guessing, here - that ABC sells the "network assets" to another broadcaster, and they keep running ABC News Radio, using the brand and the TV news assist. Westwood One does this for CNN Radio, and used to do it for NBC to keep its "brand" alive.

Oh, I've heard from more than one other source that the ABC News network inventory is not automatically attached to Paul Harvey anymore, as someone posted above...and maybe that means WTAM is going to be able to hang onto Harvey.

Hello Americans!

If the CC stations including WTAM drop Paul Harvey then he will still be audible locally on WAKR, WEOL, and ABC-owned WJR.

Very true, and most Paul Harvey fans in the Northeast Ohio area will have SOME outlet for him.

But...you can bet that ABC does NOT want to lose that clearance on WTAM, or the other major market CC news/talkers. I'm hearing more and more that they're being more accomodating to the CC stations, as their absence would put a serious hole in Mr. Harvey's affiliate list.

Oh, sure, there'll be other takers - I suspect WHK/1420 would probably take Harvey if WTAM had to drop him. But that's quite a drop in affiliate quality, from the top-rated news/talker in Northeast Ohio to a Salem-run also ran station...

No, bet that WTAM will find a way to hold onto Harvey, and that ABC will make that as easy as possible.

Isn't "a Salem-run also ran station" redundant to say?

BTW, other area Harvey affils include WLKR-FM in Norwalk, and WFUN in Ashtabula.

As well as WHBC-AM in Canton, which probably has been running Paul Harvey since the Mid-Late 1940's
