WTBS 17 to become Peachtree TV

The upcoming change will let Turner Broadcasting develop a local station to focus on Atlanta. Among other things, Peachtree TV will be home to 45 Atlanta Braves games beginning next year.

Translation: Turner South is coming back! ;D

I wonder if the cable outlets in other parts of the country will still carry this in their superstation package.

Or Canada, for that matter, since many cable and satellte companies there carry WTBS instead of national TBS.

Canada will probably just go along with the switch. Unlike in the US, every station in Canada and the US is considered a superstation and any station can be carried by any cable provider anywhere. They even carry US local stations on cable despite the fact that they threaten local Canadian stations carrying the same content.

Though Canadian stations aren't too worried -- they simply "simsub" over the US signal if the show's on at the same time on both US and Canadian channels.

That's not easy when the US network airs the show at an earlier time. Although that's very rare as Canadian networks schedule in order to create those simsub opportunities.

The worst part of sim subs is if there are 2 different shows on...case in point I was watching judge Joe Brown (yea dont say it) on a US network and they showed 1 episode fine although the second episode was a sim sub unfortunatly the sim subed Joe was the same episode that just aired. The best part is the time shifting opertunities, on the crowded thursday night line up we usually watch ER at 7pm, Gray's at 8,csi at 9pm and tape Supernatural at midnight. Not to mention the CRTC is far more lax than the FCC...I have seen skinamax movies on broadcast tv (albeit at 4am)

I asked this on the Atlanta radio board when it was mentioned there. What do you consider the heyday of WTBS: Andy Griffith/Gilligan Days/medicre Braves, When the Braves started winning, or current stuff?

I prefer wtbs 80's style, back when cable was new we got this in Ohio and I think it was the best, TBS today I could take or leave (to be honest if it went away I would not miss it). Which is the case with all the former turner channels (TCM not included), this is pretty much since Time Warner took it over. I do have to say that I think there has been a steady decline in cable tier channels across the board over the last few years (I don't know why).

Just my 2 cents...not worth a whole lot.

Will WPCH be on cable and satellite outside of the Atlanta DMA? I am in the Braves TV territory(TN) but can't get any Atlanta broadcast stations.

No. A network of local stations outside of Atlanta will be created for Braves games.

WSB-TV is on several cable systems in South Georgia and in the Highlands area of North Carolina. WSB puts their signal on the AMC-10 satellite, along with WAGA, WXIA, and WGCL. This allows carriage outside of the OTA signal. Whether a WPCH feed is put on a satellite would determine its reach.

Also, TBS will most likely be out of Canada until a new import license with the CRTC is applied for. There are rules about minimum Canadian-originated content that have to be addressed as part of the process. I understand it is a pain.

what are the chances of FSN/SportSouth simalcasting the WPCH games outside of the ATL DMA?

They do that in Minneapolis with the Twins.

Doubt it (Again, the Braves already announced a network of out-of-town local stations will be created for the Channel 17 games). I think there are other things that Braves fans (and everyone else for that matter) need to worry about.

WPCH could be sold to News Corp. to operate as a duopoly with WAGA. That could take the My Network TV affilation away from WATL. But what is more scary than that is that they could use their ownership of WPCH to get the Braves broadcasting team booted off in favor of a Fox one (the ones currently on FSN/SportSouth. When News Corp. bought Turner South, they were quick to kick out the Braves team). That would (and I hope) make Braves fans mad.

I am not a sports fan, but a I more not a fan of News Corporation and the evil Keith Rupert Murdoch (espcially after seeing last night's expose on MSNBC's Countdown).

That worries me too that WPCH might somehow end up under the control of Fox like Turner South did. They've improved their announcers this year, but their production is still horrible compared to Turner Sports.

Also, the last time the Braves had a TV network, there were some affiliates who didn't carry all the games. That would make me upset, if I ended up with an affiliate like that.

I also heard that CBS might be interested, making a duopoly with WUPA-69 (CW affiliate). What they would do with it, I have no idea, unless they would want to take away the CBS affiliation from WGCL.

It was rumored that Time-Warner was going to sell it, but for not it seems that it's not on the auction block. The rumor mill from inside the Techwood complex is that the upper echelon wants to turn WPCH into what TurnerSouth was supposed to be.

Right now the plans are to make it just a local Atlanta independent station. Negotiations are going on with the Cable companies in the metro area to carry both TBS and Peachtree TV.
