WTBS R.I.P. 1979-2007

---------------------------
WTBS-TV Atlanta, GA
"The Superstation"
1979-2007
R.I.P.
---------------------------

It was a good station. :'(

Thank you Time Warner for ruining another great institution.

I hate to see it go and I don't really know why. I know TBS is still there, but there was something cool about having the local WTBS as well.

I'll bet it had something to do with the MLB playoff contract. There was some kind of stipulation that said they couldn't have a local broadcast since it was for the cable/satellite outlet and FOX has the contract for the OTA stations. It doesn't really matter. I've got DirecTV, so I've got TBS and Peachtree TV. If I don't like what's on one, I've got the other to turn to, although they're still running about the same thing.....but so is USA, FX, TNT and the like. I'm sure as time goes by, though, Peachtree will stand on its own. We'll just have to see how much "localized" Time-Warner wants to invest in Peachtree TV.

Would Peachtree TV go back to WTBS glory days where they aired a morning, afternoon, and evening movie (usually from MGM vault)? Would they program Little Rascals and cartoons in the morning like the old days? How about running Gilligan's Island and Gomer Pyle again in the afternoons?

I don't like that the "voice" is the same one who days WATL if I'm not mistaken. The graphics were OK. Also it seemed to me that The Matrix Reloaded was supposed to come on at 9, but came on at 8 instead of Friends. My wife said she heard ads earlier in the day that said 9 as well as our Dish saying it was supposed to be 9.

Or how about them, going back to "Turner Time."

When everything starts at :05 or :35 after the hour. I always loved that.

I noticed that "Diff'rent Strokes" is supposed to be on in the mornings. I haven't seen that show in years.

No. The VO guy on Peachtree TV is the same as the one that does 97.1 The River.

Maybe that's what I'm thinking of then. I knew it was familiar and I didn't particularly care for that, but it's no big deal.

Has the Peachtree TV VO guy done other TV stations in the Atlanta market though?

Hasn't he done stuff for WXIA? I though, when the River launched, their imaging voices sounded similar. I know WXIA's imaging guy is out of Orlando, which really doesn't make much of a difference with imaging.

WXIA has 2 imaging voices. Bob Tracy does the general announcements, and Bill Murray (not the actor) based in the North Georgia Mountains that does the creative services announcements.

The WATL announcer, Jim Cutler, used to do WGCL-TV (he is also the WGN voice, and I suspect he went to WATL because of the Tribune ownership). Jim has done some work for WXIA recently (Falcons Preseason).

You can hear the same voice talent in several different markets simultaniously. While I was traveling this summer, I heard Jim Cutler on WNCN Raleigh, and former WSB-TV voice Charlie Van Dyke on WFMY Greensboro, NC. I also heard the Fox Noise guy on WSPA-TV/Greenville/Spartanberg.

Charlie Van Dyke has been around for years. Back in 1983 in Denver, he was a part time voice over teacher at the now defunct Ron Bailee School of Broadcast where I was a student.

We need reruns of "Tush!" Does anybody else remember that show besides me? Bonnie and Terry Turner and Jan Hooks were HYSTERICAL!

I remember the show very well. I worked on it and was there every step of the way. A buddy of mine has all the shows on one inch tape and is in the process of transfering them to dvd. Look for Time Warner to sell off ch. 17 One reason for the change to WPCH. I don't think over the air tv is in Time Warners best interest any longer.

I was absoluitely pi$$ed off last weekend while visiting the Atlanta area. The 3 hotels we were staying in (over 4 nites) did not have the national TBS feed in favor of Peachtree TV.
My chances of seeing playoff MLB were "gone with the wind."

To be fair, TBS was really TBS the basic cable network from the moment Turner Time was launched in 1981, to the change in the "local simulcast" in 2007.

TBS had been this way for a long time. The only time there was a "local connection" was in the first five years the channel was beamed through satellite.

The only thing that seperated them was a local Atlanta Show on Sunday Mornings, and having E/I programs.

So I'm just saying, in my opinion, they haven't been a real local channel in years.
