I was curious what's the history of WTBY Channel 54 the Trinity Broadcasting Station in Poughkeepsie? It's been on my mind for a while.
______________

I believe they always were TBN since the 70's when the network was created. I have to give them props for having the most "genteal" looking office building right along Rt. 9 in Fishkill (across from Wal-Mart)

I remember when someone pulled the cable out of the dorms in Marist, we were stuck with either channel 42 (PBS from Albany...the Dutchess Community College repeater) and 54!

AARRGGGHHHHH!!!

TBN purchased the station, then known as WFTI-TV (I think), in the summer of 1983. Prior to that, channel 54 was a noncommercial PBS station that had been on the air for about two years.

So they have been broadcasting Satan's infomercials since 1983?
______________

Meadowlark Lemon has (or, had) a TBN show, as well.

And over on BET, MC Hammer, after his 15 minutes were up and his bank account went dry, switched to TV preaching on Sundays.

Satan's infomercials is what I call these pay for pray/pray for prey type things.
You know the type:
Just send $19.95 a month for your amazing miracle water and for a Bible in English just like Jesus talked. . . .

All I know is my God is not "As Seen on TV" and I love the EWTN drinking game.
______________

MC Hammer's show was on TBN, but I never saw him on BET. His was some sort of hip-hop-influenced song-and-worship show with Hammer preaching.

Aside from Hammer, Kirk Cameron, and Meadowlark Lemon (formerly of the Harlem Globetrotters), other celebrity shows on TBN include/have included Dale Evans Rogers (Roy would appear sometimes), Gavin MacCleod, and R&B/Soul-turned-Gospel singer Candi Staton. Other washed-up TV and movie stars, such as Clifton Davis, Mr. T., Gary Busey, and Dyan Cannon, have been regular guests on "Praise the Lord".

Efrem Zimbalist Jr. ("The FBI") voices the network's top-of-the-hour IDs.
______________

I don't recall WFTI ever being anything other than religious, even before the TBN/WTBY era.

Was the WMHT translator/LPTV that's now on 42 originally on 54, before 54 became a full-power station, by any chance?

You got a link to that? I looked for it through Google without success.

I caught Mr. T delivering a 20-minute sermon during one of their summer "Praise-A-Thon", it was on late-night, while I was flipping channels. I was just gravitated to him, his sermon is interesting to say the least. You catch a lot of B and C-list stars on those shows, especially "Praise the Lord".

No, I don't and I can't seem to find my copy.
It mainly involved drinking when Mother Angelica did stuff and it doubled for the Catholic home shopping show.

Now I have seen a promo for a Catholic game show, which looks pretty intresting, does anyone have any idea when this is on?

Re: For What it's Worth -- Celebs on TBN

I wonder how much these "B-List", "C-List", "D-List" and "Z-List" stars are paid to appear on TBN programs.
