WTCL-AM 1580 Chattahoorhee

WTCL-AM 1580 is a spanish radio station it used to be r/b music a few years ago. I can listren to WTCL-AM in Tallahassee but their singal isn't that storng not as storng like WMGG-AM 820 from Tampa Fla. WTCL-AM plays varitey of spanish music but not much foucsing of spanish hip hop music. In fact Tallahassee doesn't have alot of AM radio stations but thanks for Tampa Bay and a few others outside of Tallahassee mainly in south GA. that can reach the tallahassee area on the AM dail.

You can chalk that up in part to poor soil conductivity, this plays a critical role in an AM broadcast station's coverage (among other things, maintenance, wavelength of tower, frequency position on the dial, etc...) I've seen a LOT of AM broadcast stations that are literally run into the ground. Well, they still spit out a signal, so we won't tune up/maintain what isn't broken (spell off-the-air), seems to be some operators mode of operation. With the revenue that is drawn on a lot of AM stations, I can see why... there's two side to everything.

From the toumb of the unknown jock...

WTCL-AM 1580 appears to be splitting formats: Black Gospel in the mornings,
a preaching/Christian block and Spanish radio in the afternoons. The signal is iffy at best in the Tallahassee area.

I've been to the WTCL building, (and there AIN'T that much to see.) The tower is a little less than 200 feet (so it does not have to be lighted) and the entire operation is housed in a little concrete block building. It is licensed for 10kw-day so is not as strong as WMGG's daytime 50 kw, especially given the dial position.

The previous ops guy told me they were installing a Nautel xmitter; this was
about 2 years ago. The old Gates xmitter had been hit by lighhtning and was sitting in the back yard the day I was there. So maybe at least it has ONE new component!

For you history buffs: WTCL was the old WSBP country station in Chattahoochee, later becoming traditional and southern gospel as WENO; and WTCL shortly after
a sale to new owners in 1988.

A friend of mine owned this station from 1975 to 1988. I sure am enjoying the old country music that came out of ol' 1580! I'm using it on the internet now.
Some it it goes WAY back..

I don't believe he is, but I'm not totally sure.

Chris was the guy who told me about the Nautel installation back in early 2004.

It sounds like a different morning person now.

..But then again, I hardly EVER listen..
