WTDY Stunting... but don't get your hopes up

Is any alternative crossover product acceptable?

I'm sick of that song personally, but I hear it play regularly on multiple stations in my home market.

I think it's apparent this station is trying to pluck some listeners, especially females, from Ben-FM.

I've heard that Lit song on Z100 recently.
It's not a train wreck at all for the demographic that they are targeting, in fact it's perfect because it tests well, it's upbeat, it signifies an adjustment to the 96.5 preset, and it's a song that they don't share with any cluster mates!
No!!! Put that away! Yeah I know of the excitement to post the same comment that we already know from the last 50 times, no need. There's no text here that says sister stations cannot share songs and I have also explained why it's good to share songs and that variations are based on the feel of the station through imaging and jocks, and it's how the songs are played, the overall sound of a music set, not an individual single song.

It so far seems like a transition to Hot AC, maybe slightly older gold than sister WNEW. Nothing says Rhythmic AC or rhythmic lean in the playlist. It's no more rhythmic than other major market Hot AC stations in America.
I would just say that it's early to make more specific conclusions as we could very well see some tinkering or evolution of the sound and feel. That's likely to be adjustments for those who still think hot ac is the Matchbox 20 and more format probably won't even notice or one song distorting their perception of the station.

And obviously, this doesn't compare to any past attempts at Hot AC in Philly because it's working with WBEB, not attempting to compete with the AC monster.

I agree; there is no rhythmic lean here. I jumped the gun with that remark this morning. I completely agree with your last paragraph.

Personally, I think the playlist is well structured.

I find myself listening to the sunny radio station on the iHeartRadio app every day. I play it while in the kitchen and I go to bed with it on.

Does WOGL play the song? Just curious. I see a decent dosage of 90s alternative in their music log. They certainly play more from that category than many Audacy classic hits stations out there.

Does a radio station even need a brand name in 2023 to succeed?

Is what they play and frequency good enough?

For some formats, just the kind of music they play works fine. Plenty of successful country stations are known simply as "Country" and their frequency. Same with "Classical xxx.x" or, in spoken-word radio, "News/Talk xx.x". But no one who listens to adult contemporary radio thinks of the music they're listening to as adult contemporary. It's an insider term, like "regional Mexican." So branding becomes desirable.

Yeah we have seen before, out of the gate there's sometimes a few songs in a row that fits the new format or adjustment, but that little set hints to a flavor that's then completely ruled out by the following differing title played next.

The 3 station combo here can be slightly tweaked through monitoring how the competition reacts and once there are a few ratings books they can react to any trends they observe.

I've heard that WLIT in Chicago has been able to hold onto much more of their XMAS listening than they historically have with a liter older playlist, and while Audacity is a different company and a different city, well thought out slight little adjustments to WBEB could be carefully done. It might not be the Breeze everyone seems to want back, but it's probably the most you could hope for.

I don't know how to describe my favorite format, Soft AC, to non radio people

I don’t get some of the negativity here. I would kindly suggest listening to some other Hot AC stations and you can clearly see that’s what it is.

Interestingly, it leans older than most of Audacy’s hot AC’s, some sound almost like CHR minus spin counts. This is more like the typical iHeart approach that still plays some classic 90s hot AC gold. I find that interesting because it seems like they would want to stay out of B’s lane as much as possible. I do agree with the comments that this has more potential than hot AC did on 96.5, 97.5 or 106.1 since this is a compliment to 101.1, not a competitor.

Even if the numbers aren’t great, it’s a perfect fit for the cluster strategy. It also continues to give Audacy an outlet in a large market to promote many new artists, something B can’t do that well and WOGL definitely can’t. I suspect 96.5 will have more of Audacy’s attention now as hot AC vs an also ran, second ranked CHR. They have nothing to lose. They now have a hot AC, a mainstream AC, and a classic hits station on the music side - and the top two spoken word stations in the younger leaning WIP, then KYW and even WPHT. It’s a good play to get middle aged females and males, while with 94.1 and 96.5, not being too heavily on the 35-54 demos (although it’s likely many of TDY’s listeners will be at the lower end of that).
