WTDY Stunting... but don't get your hopes up

The overlap hangups are confounding. Sister music stations over have overlap. It’s what doesn’t overlap and the rest of the presentation that distinguishes them.

I don't understand the fixation on it either. For example, B101 and Big 98.1 both play "My Prerogative" by Bobby Brown and "Straight Up" by Paula Abdul, but B101 isn't playing "Come As You Are" by Nirvana and Big 98.1 isn't playing "Bad Habits" by Ed Sheeran.

So far after sampling the station, I think it's in a decent position and doesn't sound terrible. Rotations seem to be towards the higher end of Hot AC spin totals, but are in line with what other stations are doing. But if they could just... stop with the "I'm good" song. Personal opinion, but goddamn. lol.
Also, found it amusing that their "youngest" station (96.5) and their "oldest" station (98.1) share at least one song! (Lovefool by the Cardigans). Not surprising at all, but still amusing.

Tight playlists are the norm when a format kicks off, but, yeah, I'd say that playing Miley Cyrus "Flowers," SZA "Kill Bill," David Guetta & Bebe Rexha "I'm Good (Blue)" every 90-120 minutes is a bit much for Hot AC. I'm sure thing will open up over time.

Interestingly, 96.5 will be among my top 3 when I'm listening to terrestrial and it's because of stuff like this...

Looking at co-owned Hot AC WNEW, they are playing those same songs 65 times a week, which is about every 2 hours.

Why are they called sister stations and not brothers or sibiling or cousins?
Because there is nearly a century of tradition of calling two stations in the same market "sister stations". Back in the later 20's and into the early 40's, some operators owned two AMs in the same market and called them "sister stations". Then that was prohibited, but many AMs got FM after WW II and called them "sister stations". The term stuck

And before sister stations, before even radio, there were sister ships -- vessels of the same design, in the service of the same line. Ships themselves have long been referred to as she/her, although modern style books advise against that now, decreeing that a ship is an "it" in all references.

Yes!

When I got my first internship at Organización Radio Centro in Mexico City in 1963, they owned 5 AM stations. Two of them overlapped in playlist by about 50%. What made them different was what each did not play that the other did play. Their research showed that, because of those differences, nearly no listeners listened to both of them.

I don’t get some of the negativity here. I would kindly suggest listening to some other Hot AC stations and you can clearly see that’s what it is.

Interestingly, it leans older than most of Audacy’s hot AC’s, some sound almost like CHR minus spin counts. This is more like the typical iHeart approach that still plays some classic 90s hot AC gold. I find that interesting because it seems like they would want to stay out of B’s lane as much as possible. I do agree with the comments that this has more potential than hot AC did on 96.5, 97.5 or 106.1 since this is a compliment to 101.1, not a competitor.

Even if the numbers aren’t great, it’s a perfect fit for the cluster strategy. It also continues to give Audacy an outlet in a large market to promote many new artists, something B can’t do that well and WOGL definitely can’t. I suspect 96.5 will have more of Audacy’s attention now as hot AC vs an also ran, second ranked CHR. They have nothing to lose. They now have a hot AC, a mainstream AC, and a classic hits station on the music side - and the top two spoken word stations in the younger leaning WIP, then KYW and even WPHT. It’s a good play to get middle aged females and males, while with 94.1 and 96.5, not being too heavily on the 35-54 demos (although it’s likely many of TDY’s listeners will be at the lower end of that).
Completely agree with this, just wanted to add that with the recent ratings surge for sister Hot AC stations in fellow Northeastern markets like Boston (WWBX) and New York (WNEW-FM), I actually think WTDY has potential to get good numbers as Hot AC if programmed correctly.

Wait... am I watching a rerun?
Yes and it will fail . If anything that should have put the classic hip hop format that has done fairly well everywhere they have implemented it and Philly has the demographics to support a station like that . Hot AC has to be majority local for it to be a success. They are too cheap to do that . As well as they are trying to turn syndicated CHR
hosts and shows to fit a Hot AC format . They need to do old school hip hop or go back to CHR they were above two share and had one jock I really don't see what the problem was . Now this time last year when they hit 1.0 then I could see them throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks but they were doing OK if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Absolutely two AC formats in Philly owned by the same company will not work. Like the first two times or three I've lost count lol
I guarantee when ratings drop back to low 1s and the new 96.5 isn't new anymore they will magically go back to 96.5 tdy. Or they will go country ,Rhymthic CHR , or Classic Hip hop. But given the demographics of Philly Classic Hip Hop would be likely. They already have the format and they can VT jocks and no one will care for that format. They also can potentially steal some of that WDAS money if they execute properly. But I just don't understand why they quietly flipped it right now they have been over 2 the past three months and the closest they've ever been to WIOQ , it's like they like self sabotage. As well as I can see them having no problem pairing a CHR with their other stations no shortage of ads and they had a sponsor for their studio I really just don't get it.
