WTDY Stunting... but don't get your hopes up

WTDY played RHCP's "Under the Bridge" from 1991.

To put that in perspective, that would be like a "Today's Hits" station in 1991 playing a song from 1959.
Yes and no. In pure time measurement, obviously. But Under the Bridge can fit better musically and stylistically with the hits of subsequent years than many 1959 hits could in the 90s. I mean…a Wink Martindale song? 😉

Circa 1994, WPLJ (Hot AC) had a "Top 500 of All Time" countdown, and the #1 song was "Mack the Knife" by Bobby Darin.

Later on, they limited the countdown to the "Top ### of the past 25 years".

Seems "Under the Bridge" is an anomalously (is that a word?) old title for them. It must test through the roof. Other than that, the oldest songs I can recall seeing so far are from around 1996/1997.

There's a lot here about 1's and 2's and stealing audience and being "the closest they've ever been to Q102," but...seriously, none of that is important. What's important is making money. Audacy doesn't care how many points are between them an iHeart's CHR and they're not likely thinking about WDAS's audience at all. Now this is where I'd encourage you to lean in: They can make more money having an AC and a Hot AC to complement each other (and to combo sell) than they could having an AC and an also-ran CHR. Even if WTDY's 6+ numbers you're mentioning don't go up at all, what Audacy is doing now will be better for their bottomline than what they were doing last week.
Everyone is saying it pairs well and it does... but no one has answered this question if hot AC worked they wouldn't have flipped 5 times in the last 8 years. They are clearly lost. If it was billing the way they'd hope for it never would have been flipped to begin with.

Until December 26th, 2022, sister station B101 was positioned hotter than it currently is. Because of this and 101.1's past history of absolutely destroying any competition, there wasn't a lane for a Hot AC in Philly, despite many attempts.

Now, with 96.5 and 101.1 being sister stations, and the parent company moving 101.1 slightly older and softer, they intentionally opened up a lane for sister 96.5 to shift to Hot AC.

It's not a question of Hot AC "working" as as format. It was always an issue of there being a lane for it in Philly radio, and now there is, and with their sister station's blessing, it has the best shot of sticking around longer since it won't fear a head-on attack.

It’s almost like the circumstances have changed over time. But of course you choose to ignore that.

Guess there’s something wrong with my ears. This sounds great to me. Perfect balance between rhythmic pop and pop/rock gold, and well picked currents/recurrents. I’m not understanding why this warrants any controversy. 96.5 is complementing 101.1, not competing with it. Night and day difference. Philly needed a station like this, especially since B went older/softer.

I expect the power spins to go down after a few weeks when the transition from CHR has settled down a bit.
