WTEN News 10 @4pm?

Cash-strapped Channel 10 in Albany adds 4pm (30-minute) newscast this week, and also brings Lydia Kulbida into the fold after she was dismissed from WNYT.

Any thoughts? Is this town big enough to justify a 4pm newscast?

I just caught this too (thanks to bilvihur's response jumping the thread back to the top of the list).

Are they still running a 4pm show? Considering their financial situation, I'd not be surprised if this 4pm show was mostly comprised of fluff, and possibly some "paid" segments.

4pm is just too early for a serious newscast... most people aren't home from work yet. Even if you happen to get out of work at 3 or 3:30, the typical "target demo 25-54 female" probably has shopping to do, errands to run, kids to chauffeur around to practices/meetings, etc. Not to mention, Albany's a city where many people don't seem to mind commuting 30 minutes or an hour to live in some of the nicer communities a little further from the city center.

I'd think a 7pm newscast would be better than 4pm. Frankly, I still think either timeslot is odd unless you're in a major market, but if you're going to go for an odd timeslot with news, go with 7pm. More people are home by that point and it dovetails nicely with network news at 6:30.

I think 4PM newscasts is probably directed to the out-of-school/off from work early crowd, if that's even possible. I noticed on stations with 4pm newscasts they fill the hour with a little local stuff and then a whole bunch of junk like entertainment segments, cooking segments, VNRs, health reports, tabloid filler. More less the same stuff shown in their Noon newscasts. All the big stuff is save for either five or six. WKBW use to have an afternoon magazine show call PM Buffalo as a sister show to AM Buffalo which is still on the air. At least they did something interesting than filler.

The only thing a 4pm newscast would be good for is if the TV station's news is already airing on local radio.
Therefore people on their way home would be able to "hear" what's going on. Otherwise having a 4pm TV newscast makes no sense what-so-ever. As someone else already stated, 4pm is too early to air such a broadcast because most viewers are not home from work yet.
