WTF!!! KTFM tweaks format

Baseball great Yogi Berra used to say, "Nobody goes there. It's too crowded."

You seem to be saying, "Nobody likes Mix. It's too popular."

Not at all. I give props to Mix for being successful. Much like the KVET ordeal, I enjoy KTFM because of a unique spin they bring(brought?) to SA radio. Their flip to rhythmic helped forced the market to become increasingly friendly to a dance music product. It's just a shame that the tweak could change all of that. If KTFM is going to become a Mix duplicate musically (barring mixshows), then who to listen to becomes a matter of presentation. Mix definitely has the edge on the "larger than life" presentation.

Oh well, time to jump on the Party 97.7 bandwagon while it lasts.

I agree. I still listen to KTFM but Party is really starting to come around.

I'm curious to see what your average listener thinks about the move KTFM made. My guess is that they flip to Party or The Beat. Either way, it's a win win for Univision.

Nothing like the KVET odeal, they screwed KVET all the way around up.

Party should switch to KTFM's old format and stop playing pop rock.

Well no, it's not really rock. I guess the more accurate terminology would be "non-rhythmic". With the exception of OneRepublic - "Good Life" and Hot Chella Rae "Tonight, Tonight" their non-rythmic adds are tired out recurrents like train - "Hey Soul Sister" and Neon Trees - "Animals".

Personally, I'm surprised that they would make changes at this point. Either way, I don't see them overtaking KXXM or KBBT anytime soon.

I'm curious: did VP/English programming Mark "I'm a genius, just ask me" Landis get Border to pony up significant dollars to do market research? Or does he just think his p/t prod peeps can image and street team be aggressive enough to try and compete? Did his market research say "there's a huge opportunity to beat MIX with an inferior lineup, imaging, promotion, and marketing by playing their playlist?"

Mix's cume is quite large, healthy, and growing but unless Border goes into attack mode with deep pockets to back it up, there isn't much chance that this will work. You can't tell me that this group has extra dough needed to change the habits of the 300-400k in cume they'd need to overtake MIX.

Now, if someone would just by the Border Stations then things could get interesting. Though the markets are too small and don't have the $$, a certain wizard (Merlin) sure would stir things up. Merlin obviously would be able to clean up the talk mess(es) in the 2 Border markets. And Randy isn't afraid to spend big money in the right competitive situation...

That would make for some great radio here.

What will KTFM's new format be when it switches? Any guesses? They obviously can't bring the good KTFM back.

This tweak was very minor. Most of the playlist is still Top 40 Rhythmic, which is a good thing. Although, I am curious to see what impact this has with the listeners.

Adding two songs is not exactly a format change. BTW, KTFM had one of its best months in PPM in June in some key female demos. It beat KBBT in Women 18-34, and was within a half share in both Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 in Prime Rotator which is what advertisers buy.

Which makes you wonder why the slight lean towards Mainstream. ??? If the uptempo format is working, why fck with it? Landis should have left KTFM as is and focus more on KTSA.

What worked for KTFM in the past month was adding more uptempo/dance tracks and leaning less on the hip hop. They sounded better than ever before the tweak. And it is a tweak... they are just gradual with them at KTFM. When KTFM tweaked from Rhythmic to Hot AC there was plenty of overlap as there was when they went from Hot AC to CHR and CHR to Rhythmic.

It appears the Chr/Pop lean only lasted a month on KTFM. As of today, they sound more Chr/Rhythmic with recurrents such as Missy Elliott- Work It, Beyonce- Crazy In Love, T.I.-Bring Em Out and others.

It's funny that you have so much time to critique KTFM's programming when they are the station up 43% to a year ago in Women 25-54 - a very key demographic, while Mix is off nearly 50%.

It's not a "critique" it's more of an observation....Get it right.
