WTF Were They Thinking?

The stupidity of the dynamic duo is even more apparent in this article from the Albany Times-Union.

Just one little excerpt:

During the broadcast, the shock jocks called the family business the "Wormwood Diner" and mentioned its Hamburg Street location. They also encouraged people to visit the diner to view "Susie Burns" -- and threatened to photograph her with a cellphone camera and post it on the Internet, the lawsuit noted.

Un-believable.

When he was doing afternoons on WGR a dozen years ago, J.R. Gach was passionate, feisty and opinionated (like a good talk host should be) but he never descended to this--makes you wonder what's happened to him and changed him in the intervening years.

You're kidding, right?

You must not've heard this imbecile for the last dozen years.

JR is the most loathesome piece of on-air $hit I've heard.

I would suggest that he is mentally ill, but then again, I don't need to, because it's a matter of record.

Susie Burns? Nice. Here's to wishing that he have some consideration for the rest of us, and go hang himself with a very strong belt.

Didn't I read something earlier this year, on a radio-info board, that he'd had some kind of emotional breakdown? I think the post I read back then said he was back home and doing an internet only show off his own website. I got curious and checked out a sample and it sounded so amatuerish and pointless that I quick stopped listening.

As loathsome as his sick comments prove him to be, I agree with Bob Smith that he did a much better show back on WGR in the early 90s - a bit of a grandstander, but entertaining.

Sounds like nowadays he's got Ron Hunter Self Destruction Syndrome.

Hope he has come to see the error of his ways and turns his life around toward being a good person.

Despicable. Reprehensible. Irresponsible. Bastards!

Pity Mr. Gache, so without blemish or fault is he that he and his sidekick can laugh at an idividual who's been scared for life. Gache, a man of corpulent stature who when sued for for publicizing the unlisted home phone number of a public health official with who he had issues while at WGY Schenectady, claimed to be bi-polar.

Bob1370 must not have heard or paid attention to the witty musings of Mr. Gache when he was on WGR in the early 90's, where the hate-monger and his lovely wife "Suzie" plyed their craft in middays. Your a better man for not having heard Gache's full repetoire of ill-reasoned logic, bomabastic stupidity and what he presumed to pass as humor.

A friend who worked at WGR in the 90's tells this story: When Gache gave notice at WGR, he told his bosses that he was leaving "to care for his sickly father in Tampa." Conducting due diligence, WGR management discovered Gache had signed a contract to do middays at WWL in New Orleans.

Tears flowing, JR and Suzie, did their last WGR show telling listeners that they were leaving to care for JR's ailing dad in Florida. Problem was, WGR managers knew exactly what Gache was up to and had the paperwork to prove it. When they presented their proof to Gache, he vehemently denied it, insisting it was contrived by management in order to hold him to his WGR contract. Two weeks later JR and Suzie, were on the air in the Big Easy gushing about how good it was to be "back home and how much they hated, cold, dreary, hicktown Buffalo."

The latest Gache incident is just one oif many that cause compassionate, caring, educated and articulate people to look at those in radio and think them to be fools. Hard to argue with that opinion at times such as this. The man gives radio a bad name. Away with him.

The Big Sleazy

Two holiday wishes for J.R. Gache:

1. NOBODY ever hires him to do radio again.

2. Ed Levine sues his assets to recover as much of the $1-million as is possible.

One holiday wish for Ed Levine:

That the lawyers he uses to sue J.R. soak him for so much money that he doesn't get a penny for his efforts.

JR Gach... the definition of the word gasbag. Bloated, self-important and intolerant. He fits right in with guys like Don Imus, Michael Savage, Rush, Tom Bauerle, Sean Hannity, Sandy Beach, Opie & Anthony (who have a track record of making fun of the retarded and handicapped), Bill O'Reilly and the rest of the well known talk show hosts that can be heard on talk radio these days; all in the name of patriotism and freedom.

Gach should be sentenced do a week's worth of shows from a burn treatment center and have to watch a few skin graft operations and "acid baths" that burn victims have to endure, though I doubt that would make any difference.

Guys like Gach never see the errors of their ways because they don't believe they're wrong or guilty. In a way, they're like serial criminals and psychopaths: It's always somebody else's fault. They see themselves as the victims. And because they have a five thousand watt pulpit from which to preach, there are always lemmings who will buy in to their perverted logic.

What's really pathetic is there's always a GM, PD or owner like Ed Levine who's willing to take a chance on people like Gach "because the guy knows how to get attention." Kinda like Ted Bundy and the unibomber.

And you say he's doing commercials on Sirius? What client would be fool enough to have him endorse their product?

I can't remember the exact place on the ladder of showbiz that radio people sit--according to Howard Stern.

It was either one rung above or one rung below circus clown.

I have to admit, whenever I read posts by radio peole on the various boards here at radio-info, I sometimes start to feel that, on the average, people in this biz are getting the treatment they deserve, considering how poorly educated they are--even in the area of CCOMMUNICATION!

Communication Breakdown

This might be due to the fact that communicating isn't the primary interest of the business. It may have been at one time, but no longer. It's primarily all about sales, to the extent that music or talk segments are there only to fill the time between commercials. Or so it seems.

Although tempting, it's unfair to paint the entire lot of broadcast professionals with one brush. (I'd prefer the painting be left to me or at least Uncle Oskie, BTW.) There are plenty of degreed professionals in the business these days... hell, this board alone is home to posters with JD's and PhD's, BA's, MA's and of course, plenty of BS's! :D

Stern used to call radio the lowest wrung on the entertainment ladder. Letterman, I think, used to refer to DJ's as being one step below circus clown. Guys like Gach seem to reinforce that image, don't they.

That has ALWAYS been the case, for radio as well as television. The difference today is that the standards are dramatically lower than they were years ago. The RESPECT, or lack thereof, paid to programming is at an alltime low.

You Get What You Pay For

Respect for programming people is at an all-time low. Pay for programming people is arguably at an all-time low. And you wonder why clear-thinking, educated people seek other employment?

You get what you pay for. The "geniuses" have determined that voice-tracked pap, computer-generated formats, and syndication are "good enough" for listeners. The result is a generation of listeners who have learned that radio is a good source for hearing new songs, which they download and put into their MP3 players to avoid the endless repetition of radio. Radio is no longer a primary source for news and entertainment for that generation.

Why should anyone be surprised at the number of stupid comments emanating from radio talk shows these days? Since Stern, more and more programmers have been urging their ‘shock jocks’ to make outlandish comments in order to garner more ratings. But yet they back off once sponsors start pulling ads because of outrageous comments, like the one made against this young woman, who I am glad won a million dollar lawsuit.
I totally agree with one poster who wrote that the exodus of good talent is leaving broadcasting because they are tired of the endless pap on the air today, plus having to deal with the people at corporate. Low pay is also an issue, although it seems that there is no problem when it comes the executives’ pay.
My personal feeling is that the salvation of radio will be for former on-air veterans who made big money in the 90s to come in and start buying some of these “spin-off” stations the mega media corporations are selling off. With their experience in broadcasting, and the right talent, perhaps they can give these automated jukeboxes a run for their money.

This thread is taking an interesting turn:

Here's a quote from a sales person who took me to lunch (yes, it was trade) about two months ago and he was adamant about this, "I go to work every day so those 'knuckleheads' (meaning the personalities on his station) can get a pay check." Wow! Know what I said? "If those 'knuckleheads' weren't doing their jobs at your station, you'd have nothing to sell... or would you prefer to sell only The Lake." (Guess I tipped my hand as to where this guy works.) Got pretty quiet pretty fast... I believe the next words were, "how 'bout them Bills!?" (The Bills at the time were in the midst of a four game winning streak.) A lot of readers here might be surprised to read that there are (veteran) sales people who don't even know what their own station is doing. Communications business, ehh? And don't get me started about GM's, PD's and consultants... although there are some very good PD's and consultants... GM's? Let's not go there in this thread.
