WTFM..Saturday Night Special

Sure was nice to hear the local legend, Mike "Rock n Roll" Padgett on the air tonight. The gentleman has impecabble musical tastes and talents for mixing. Plus he knows when to hush and let the music take over. Please come back on a weekly basis....We need you!!

I have heard the Gary guy do that show and he is the pits. I understand the show doing well, but who can stand that guy? Will the LEGEND be there all the time or was he just filling in?

Mike has always been one of my favorite Tri-Cities jocks. He has that distinctive voice and makes you feel good. I remember when he was doing the show on a more permanent basis. I like Gary and all...I'm just a bigger fan of Mike Padgett.

I know Mike personally and although he loves air work..he loves his time off more...was only filling in last nights. You guys are right, though. Mike is the tops and Gary is the "pits."

It's interesting that all these comments would get posted after a guy returns to the air after nearly 11 years. I'm not knocking Mike "rock and roll" Padgett, but please! I'm sure Gary isn't the best DJ on the air, but at least he's consistant and has the ratings to stand behind his popularity. You can feel jealously in the air from most of the comments. I myself will continue to listen to the oldies and the 80's on Saturday night.

What jealousy? There's no jealousy in my past comment about Mike Padgett. Gary and I are friends and former co-workers. He's a good guy, and does a good show. But I also happen to be a friend and a fan and a former co-worker of Mike Padgett. I knew Mike Padgett and admired his work long before I ever knew of a Gary Stevens. So, no jealousy here. Just words of admiration and friendship.

Crossman is absolutely correct!!! I know both gentlemen personally, as well, and the fact is that Mike is a much bigger(well make that better) talent than Gary(Duane) could ever be. Crossman and I both appreciate talent and aren't afraid to say so!!! With that stick and lack of contemporary competition on Saturday nights in the Tri-Cities..either Crossman or myself could achieve better numbers than we've ever had in our long and storied broadcast careers.

Anyone can show up and do a request show.

Gary Stevens makes it more than just answering phones and playing requests. He spends a lot of time and effort on the Saturday Night Special during the week and hours before his show starts. Gary lives to make each Saturday better than the last. We can learn a lot from his dedication to just the one show.

Mike is awesome, but it's Gary's show now. Now play me, "Born To Be Alive!".

Anyone, like me,can sing offkey with the real entertainers(the performing artists). It takes a real pro to get your message and fun out and done before the singing begins and still maintain the energy level!!!

From what I have heard Gary does a really good job of communicating with the audience...So many radio folks listen like radio folks...Have you ever heard a listener say "wow he nailed the post ..or what a bitchin music bed.. or what a big voice liner guy"...Who cares!!..bells and whistles sound cool to us...but it means nothing to the folks that fill out the diarys...Gary has built a rapport with his audience and that takes time..talent.. and lots of dedication..

Yes, Mike is Still Alive. Not dead yet. But he is a "SoftRocknRoll" Legend. 8)

Mike "Rock and Roll" is a Legend in the Tri Cities and always will be, but i suspect his 70-100 thousand dollar a year salary as a sales person is much more appealing to him. There have been Legends everywhere, but its like anything, when people don't hear you everyday they forget about you. At one time "The Midnight Rambler" was huge, but now, no one cares and his old loyal fans think he sucks. The Legends should be remembered for what they once contributed, but don't expect the same reaction now, because people just don't remember.

Gary sounds like the typical "Ron Radio" DJ from the 70's trying to make his voice sound big, over exaggerating certain inflections, etc. Kinda like Ted Knight on speed... There's no communication skills whatsoever...he doesn't even sound like a real person on the air.

I just thought i would put my two cents worth in since everyone seems to know me so well. I'm Gary Stevens and yes i do the Saturday Night Special. I took it over once two of the predecessors decided they didn't want it anymore. I enjoy what i do every Saturday night and hope the listeners enjoy it as well. I might sound like a 70's has been to many of you, but the last time a checked it was a 70's and 80's party and dance show. And yes, I'm sure Mike can do a much better job than myself, but there aren't many people who would give up their Saturday Nights with family and friends to work five hours, take requests off three lines, edit calls, interact with the listeners, keep the music flowing, check e-mails all for the grand total of 50 dollars a night. You may say, well you get paid for what you're worth. Maybe so, but at least i try to do real radio instead of being placed in a box and becoming a liner reader. Sure i do radio different, but that's what makes everyone so unique. I do have the ratings to back what i do, and i'm not trying to impress a bunch of "big headed" ego seekers on here. The listeners will always be first for me and the rest of it doesn't really matter. Thanks to those of you who have given good feedback, and as for the rest. We'll just let the ratings sort it out.

And that may not seem important, to some of ya'll, but when you enjoy what you do, the listeners enjoy it, and that makes all the difference in the world....
:-*

Both Gary and Mike have made a contribution to that show in some form. And if I had to pick who I would want to sound like on the radio...It would be Mike Padgett. The guy is just too cool for school!
TWSP
Peace!
