I heard Steve Mann and Taylor Morgan just signed contracts for 5 years at WTFM. Rumor has it Steve is making $100,000 and Taylor is making $60,000. I also heard from a Car Dealer that Steve's remote rate is now $150.00 an hour! Wow! I hear him all the time at remotes for car dealers. He must be getting the cash! Why pay Taylor at all - she never works and sucks!
I also heard HOT 104.3 is going live with jocks next week. Gunner Jackson is back in town and is the new am guy making 45 k . Joey White is middays!! Afternoons will be voice tracked by Steve Mann using some other name like Bruce Clark using Jack Daniels, Steve is going by Colt 45 malt liquor! One thing he has on Bruce is that he will appear in pictures and will not be afraid to show his face!! WXBQ is saving money by having Richard Quillian clean the restrooms and Dennis Kelly is cleaning Bruce Clarks dirty diapers and Steve Stroud is helping Hagy to his car each day! JUST KIDDING - EVERYONE CALM DOWN! Hot should be interesting to listen to and WTFM is stuck with Steve and Taylor for 5 years. No wonder Steve Mann is building a new home on the lake! Keep radio in the tri cities sounding bad and I will keep laughing at the boring talent who think they something!! p..s Steve Stroud get rid of the mullet!

>When did Gunner get back in town from Dallas?
When did Joey White get back in town from Chicago?
Why is Steve Mann building by the lake, its polluted?
When did Mullets go out of style?
Answers are needed.

MMM MMM these are sum taistee rumours.
It makes me long for the days when radio was
decent in the T.C. (that's slang for Tri-Cities, my homeslice!)
It really sounds like the same bunch is in the mix over there.
Leave Steve alone, if some of the higher ups let him loose, you'd
see how creative he can really be. Too bad 'TFM is so darned
politically correct about um, er, EVERYTHING!
Naybe Bruce Clark should apply for a PD job over there!
(Please commence the hate replies now!)

Oh Yeah....reaaaalllll creative....which flavor of monotone do you prefer?

True, Steve Mann is very talented and 'TFM is stifling him over there. If he's making that much money over there, more power to him. And, did you ever wonder why hunchbackbruce has that hunch back? Maybe too much extracurricular activity? Inquiring minds want to know.

Steve Mann- Once Upon A Time

In the Glory Days of WQUT in the late 80s, when they ruled the market (it's true!), Steve Mann was their morning guy. Their catch phrase was "Wake Up With a Real Mann."

He eventually gave way to John Boy and Billy- which seems to be a cost cutting move.

Would WQUT still be pulling in what they did back then if they stayed with Mann in the morning? I don't know- probably not- music has changed and obviously country had a boom in the early 90s with Garth Brooks that still continues today- which is what WXBQ gets their ratings from. And obviously John Boy and Billy have a lot more resources as a syndicated act than a local DJ would.

But I do remember Mann had a following and would think with what was then a Top 40 station in the days that Bon Jovi, Guns and Roses, and a lot of rock ballads made up the Top 40 he could be let loose more than what you have at an adult contemporary station.

John Boy and Billy obviously had a lot more resources, but Mann struck me as a decent DJ doing "Morning Zoo" type of stuff.

;D :D ;D
ROLTF

In the history of the Tri-cities NOBODY... I REPEAT NOBODY has ever made $100K per year as an on the air DJ in a base salary. This is the classic hype of salary brag... just take the number, divide it by 3 and you are coming up with a more realistic figure. Clear channel airstaff members are famous for this type of hype.

The few that are making great money are in LA, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, St. Louis, San Francisco, and Seattle. For the most part, these are UNION markets, with professionals managing their operations.

How do I know? I have worked this market since '82, and for many years I was the highest paid announcer in this market. I made the largest amount of my salary at contract jobs on the side.

The owners and managers of the radio stations in tri-cities may pay their entire airstaff a total of $100K as a budget item.

I can assure you that the ONLY people making this kind of money are the GM's, Owners, and sales people who have through the grace of god and a good account list have hustled their way up the money tree.

No offense, but Taylor and Mann could probably make more money in other endeavors. ::)

NOPE.......Not even $50K for Steve.......dream on.....and I agree---Taylor puts me to sleep!!!

just talked to Mann and he says he is making so much money that his mobile home payments are no problem...he is not living on the lake though, his septic tank is overflowing at the moment and it just appears to look like boone lake. He told me when he saves up enough money he will have the tank pumped and the yard mowed. 100k just doesn't go as far as it used to back in the 80's.

;D
Now THIS sounds like the Steve Mann that I know :p. You see there is a method in the madness. Livin' large in the mobile home, you get to spend more money on those things that really count, like a 180" widescreen TV with Dolby DBX Lucasfilm approved sound system... so you can watch the saturday cartoons and NASCAR in style.

When the cesspool backs up, and floods the yard, you can FIRE CHEMLAWN... and you get a FREE in-tense fertilizer treatment and put THAT money toward good use, on a new ATV. Also all that MANN-LY smell from the sewer backup is a natural Groupie deterrent!!! And it tends to keep the bill colletors and the title loan company away too!

Truly REMARKABLE! I heard Taylor Morgan got jealous of Mann's pad, and got her a doublewide with an expansion.
;D

[Very interesting...considering I never posted this remark!]

Spindoctor, won't say if I agree with you or not on how talented Tri Cities DJs are, but if you really believe they AREN'T, then I'm sure the reason is probably because they actually use terms like "HOMESLICE!" Great info by Pratte and I'd also say Taylor is right on those salary rumors. I wouldn't know but it's just an opinion.

God...You guys are getting screwed. I hate to brag, but I've been making six figures in the tri-cities for a while now. No wait...That's a decimal point, not a comma. By the way, you spelled onion wrong. It's with an o, not a u.

???
Hmmm....
step away from the cronic candy... ;D ;D ;D

In reality, on the talent side who makes those dino-saur dollars?

Rick Dees
Paul Harvey

Those taking pay~ola....

...
then there is the rest of us. Eating off the dollar menu at the Micky D's.
We deserve a break today... in the paycheck dept.

Just think of that next time you see one of those sales~pimps driving up in their new ride...
That was YOUR money that you left on the table... when you agreed to work at your current salary.

WE are big on talent in this biz... but lousy at negotiating.

I've considered hiring an internet P.I. type of service to find out what everybody on-air in this market is making. What I hate : Is that everybody is too afraid to tell each other what they're making. You can't just ask somebody. They can't just tell you. If you find out you're getting screwed, there's gonna be drama!!! If they find out they're getting screwed, there's gonna be drama!!! Fact is : We're all getting screwed. Look, it may not always feel like it, but this is a top#100 market. I know several radio personalities in markets not a whole lot further up the food chain than us, getting pretty big bucks. Even working for some of the same companies. But those are personalities that really found a way to separate themselves. Don't get me wrong here : Most Jocks I hear, (not all of them) seem to be cut from the same cloth. They don't separate themselves from the pack, because they're too afraid of being fired (I guess). And I understand, because for the most part I'm drinking from the same Kool-Aid. But it's hard to call ourselves talent, if all we offer is a deep voice (or cute and perky in some cases). I mean, really...All we do is read. Any fifth grader with too much testosterone can belt out a "that was and this is" with a little bass. Obviously, morning shows here are pretty much cookie cutter. Again, this is not meant as an insult. But really, how overdone is "battle of the sexes", "he said-she said" kind of stuff??? Rip & read from the prep??? Or do impressions of Elvis and Don Knotts??? It would be funnier if Elvis and Don Knotts were making sweet, sweet love with one another. Fact is : If you do ever step out here, you might get paid more. Chances are though, you'll be getting paid more somewhere else. Because either we'll end up in a bigger market where they might pay you what you think you're worth, because you sounded different than the rest...Or you'll get fired and end up working a higher paying job at a factory. If radio continues on the path that it is now, and we want to stick out in the Tri-Cities, then we better just suck it up and enjoy having one of the easiest jobs in town. Because there's absolutely no reason that I can think of to pay us more. If we gripe about it and get fired or quit, they'll replace us right? Right. Most people on-air here, have roots in the area and don't want to go work some place else...So we're just gonna have to deal with it. I'm a realist. Of course that can't be said for everyone, especially programmers and production/imaging wizards.
PS : I think it's safe to say that I've freed the : from it's chains. Thank you, in advance, for reading my diatribe.

???
Something to ponder.... ::)

How can someone who is making $7 per hour (as on air talent), identify with people who are in a higer financial class/range?

How can you even pay for the gas to go to work on such a salary?

I wouldn't be suprised to find that some DJ's in this market are working for "scrip," and forced to buy their food and clothing from the "company store." :'(

For those who are not connecting to my thoughts... just look at the Labor tactics of the mining industry after the civil war.

This is a matter of RESPECT.

Can you only imagine the quality of product that you could create for radio programming, if the owners took this business seriously???

Can you only inagine the increase in revenue stream, when you have truly created a better radio product to sell???

Most radio owners truly don't think BIG enough, or have any respect whatsoever for the programming product that they create. The myoptic view is that of a sales person who got lucky and was promoted to a management position.

Managers generally view programming as an "expense"... that is all!

Larry Carrier never dreamed that this race track could hold more than 40,000 people.

Bruton Smith proved him wrong!

We need a Bruton Smith in the management of radio... and NASCAR wages for our Radio RACERS!!! ;D

Make your move DJ's and put the pedal to the metal. Get the salary you deserve, or plan on cleaning the bugs off someone else's winshield in the pits.
