WTH Squirrel Hill Tunnel??

The other night, I was listening to 103.1 WKVE in my car and drove into our beloved SHT. When I did, the music on my radio changed to r & b/techno. It even sounded like FRENCH techno. And it was coming in clear as a bell. What on earth???!?

A very weird thing indeed.... did it continue through to the other end? You probably heard someone in a car nearby with a
modulator on 103.3.

On the other hand, if it was just a short duration near one end of the tunnel you may have gotten
a form of "radio telescope" reception. Say if you're 100 feet down the tunnel, there's still some "sky" in view,
and you can definitely receive a signal from that direction, while even locals may be inaudible.
But this situation is usually pretty quick changing as you go deeper into the tunnel.

Some places have added small local transmitters and/or leaky coax to tunnels
to prevent silence or distracting noise from no signal.

Stations need to have about a city grade signal at the receive antenna of the tunnels for it to be repeated inside, if not is relays noise that it picks up. That system was put in place a few years ago by CMU students to relay FM signals using an "intentional radiator" setup just like AM reception has worked in tunnels for years.
