WTHE Tech Info

I've been listening to WTHE. Not a bad signal at all in Jersey..especially for a 1 kw. Does anyone know what type of transmitter and processing they are using now and if they use a traditional insulated tower or a folded monopole. Their internet feed sounds very good as well.

Couple of weeks, I had a chance to listen to AM 1520. It's probably the best sounding AM station (in terms of audio quality) that I've heard in a long time!!!

I haven't seen the site in a few years, so I can't speak to their current equipment. At their current site and previous one, their vertical radiators were copper wires hung along the appropriate length of the tower. I don't recall seeing anything else like it. They've had an interesting history. They were a 10kw operation with a three-tower directional, then non-directional at 1kw, but 250w for the first and last two hours of the day because of WKBW/WWKB in Buffalo. I recall they got those "critical hours" removed and now run 1k sunup-sundown (in Dec & Jan, their sundown is 15 mins later than anyone else in the market).

I do pass their tower quite often and based on the number of communications antennas mounted on it, I would doubt that it is a series fed tower. The tower is probably grounded and fed part way up the tower.
My 1st radio employment was for 1520 when it was WFYI, owned by the Herald Tribune and was a 10KW DA3 in Manhasset with studios in the lower concourse of the Roosevelt Field Shopping Center. There are some pics at:

Recent satellite photos show that the transmitter building in Manhasset is still standing, but it's buried in the trees. If you look carefully, you can still see the concrete tower bases. Tower #2 is easiest to spot.
Ancient history says that the station started as WKIT in Oyster Bay, I think at 250 watts. Legend has it that they tied the counterpoise system into the adjacent Long Island Railroad tracks and the RF disabled the railroad's ASC (Automatic Speed Control) system.

Back when Jackson Armstrong was on KB, I tried listening during the nighttime hours. Unfortunately , many times WTHE left their carrier on after sign off. KB was a big heteredyne squeal, with it dissappearing completely as I drove toward their new tower site near Voice Road in Carle Place, LI. I wonder if it were the GM, Sales M or board operator who forgot to kill the TXmtr! Maybe a Reverend doing part time work?
