WTHZ-FM Majic 94.1 sounding great-Increases Oldies playlist!!!!!!!

The power of Majic 94.1 is being heard everywhere! Most of the businesses I go in are now playing it, and it sounds like that are playing alot more Oldies and alot less of that 1980`s crap. The Oldies are VERY strong in this area!
 
If you think their music is on track....wait a few......

they go thru periods where if feels pretty right on...and then the station drives off the road for long periods of time.

Very inconsistent.

Duh!!!! Can you not figure out by now that Goodtimesgreatoldies is Tom Collins the VP of Davidson County Broadcasting..Who else would make such a statement..BIGAPE!
 
What a load of crap!!! That post is SO obviously by someone at 94.1. Do you think we're idiots! It was either TC or maybe Stacy. Give me a break!!!
Looks like someone was cruising the site to see if anything was said about their station. I'm laughing out loud!
 
You nailed it Atticus. That station is so far in outer space musically that I'm surprised they have any numbers at all. Compare the numbers now to about two years ago when Tom Collins took over music and programming. They were so much stronger than they are now, especially 25-54. What are they now? Number 8 or 9? They used to be a solid top 5. Dumping that awful morning show was a step in the right direction, but not hiring an intelligent PD was 2 steps (at least) backwards. Gig will never get it. He's got a small market mentality and he's not willing to listen to anybody that has any programming savvy. I heard so much crap on that station a few weeks ago including "Please Mr. Postman" by the Carpenters in PM drive. That's right, The Carpenters! Unbelievable! Only a total idiot would even touch that song! Not only that, they had a "special weekend" going that I believe they called a "Retro-Weekend". Ahhh, Hellloooo! Aren't you ALWAYS retro???
Sometimes the people that are in charge really need to take a look at how uneducated they are as programmers. 94.1 is a joke. No malice. Just truth.
 
I don't have a horse in this race. I don't know anybody at THZ.

But, looking through many hours of their playlist, I think the music mix looks pretty good.
I've seen a lot of research on 60s/70s titles in the last 10 years, and THZ is playing generally good testers.

WOMEN in their target demo really like the Carpenters, so Please Mr. Postman isn't a stretch for a secondary type
song. Your comment is strictly your personal opinion from a MALE point of view. That would be a dangerous way to pick music.

Gees, give the guy a break or two! Let him stroke it 'cause the station does sound better than ever!!! They really play some lefty left fielders sometiems that makes you say, "WHAT IS THAT??" I love it when they do that~! makes it fun!! Like he said, good times AND great oldies!! (sorry I can't see the smiley faces and stuff and don't know if it's like that for everybody, but that's why I didn't include the smiley, the one with sunglasses, the one with his tongue out, the one winking, the grinininng one, the shocked one and etc.()

I don't base this just on my own opinion about the Carpenters! Yes, some women DO like the Carpenters and even some men. BUT not a song that was a mid-chart stiff to begin with! Yes, generally, most of the songs they play are good enough to play, but what about all of the other ones that aren't? That, is simply the kiss of death! And there are way too many of them. To further prove my point look at their very mediocre numbers in their "target demo"! Yeah, the Carpenters are good for big numbers!

Again, this is not from my male point of view, it's from a very well-qualified PD's point of view.
 
when you say some of the songs WTHZ plays are "not good enough to play", what songs are you talking about? I remember playing the Carpenters "Please Mr Postman" on radio when it was a hit and it is a feel good uptempo song. I think they do a generally good job, nowhere as good as WRBK in SC which I believe is run by the local school system.
 
This is my own personal theory about why recordings of The Carpenters do not test well with the female 25-54's that their music should attract:

A lot of listeners (and radio people too for that matter) can't get beyond the contrast of the "wholesome" life she and brother Richard lived and the tragic way that she died (Bulimia). When they hear that distinctive voice on The Carpenters records, primarily for women, it tends to subconsciously dredge up fears that they themselves may be at risk for becoming bulimic.

Most psychologists would say that we all need to examine the "negatives" in life that could potentially affect us. Most radio programmers (who are predominately males) interpret music that has this effect on their audience as "not testing well" and therefore does not make the playlist.

I won't say this is particularly a wrong-thinking attitude . . . . it's just one of the quirks in these illogical beings called humans.

As a male I think Karen Carpenter sounds sexy.

I like her music a lot, and my station plays it.

I'm subjected to Majic's regular playlist at one restaurant I go to, and I don't think it's getting better.

Mike Harvey is ... interesting ... at night but hardly oldies.
 
My wife loves Karen Carpenter and frankly, I think she has an incredibly sexy voice. Mr Postman is not a song I like. I'm not too sure about all the indepth psychology behind the Carpenters. I think they were way overplayed when poplular and people just got sick of them. I also think they have a reputation of being "syrupy sweet".
 
Don't get me wrong, this opinion of the music on 94.1 is certainly not just limited to "Please Mr. Postman" (which played again today in midday), but songs like The Doobies - "Another Park, Another Sunday" (STIFF), Steve Forbert "Romeo's Tune" (WHAT??!!), Nu Shooze, Jody Watley.....These titles and or artists are not worthy enough to get any airplay on a classic hits format! In fact, the Steve Forbert song, E,W&F "Serpentine Fire and Neil Diamond "Longfellow Seranade all played today in the same hour! My god! All three of those were mid-chart songs and DO NOT test well! Better yet, I also heard Get Down Tonight (KC) played next to Shake Your Groove thing in another hour! Wow! Disco fever!
Or how about the Stones, Doobies, Duran Duran and the Beatles all back to back! Wow! Now were a classic rocker!
This station doesn't have a clue and they never will until the wanna-be's that run it are out the door. It takes skill to schedule music and the person(s) doing it now has no programming sense.
We could go into their awful imaging but that's another post for another day.

I agree Powerdown. As far as some of the stiffs mentioned, Another Park Another Sunday was a big song when I worked on WHEE in Martinsville. Songs by Jody Watley, Steve Forbert and such have great "wow haven't heard that song in a while" factors to me. I did check Wikipedia and Nu Shooz "I Can't Wait" went to number 3 on Billboard's Hot 100 and spent 15 weeks in the top 40. not bad. "Romeo's Tune" did peak at number 11, nothing to sneeze at either. I enjoy and respect a station that takes chances and doesn't limit themselves to the same heavily researched top ten songs. I do agree the music mix at times on WTHZ is not great, seems to be best overnights to me.
 
So how many songs does a station play in the course of a day? Sounds to me like some of these post are looking at a hand full of tunes and not the entire picture. If you really wanted to pick a station's music apart you can certainly find it and make it fester. I listened to the True Oldies the other day and there were a couple of songs that I felt were mid chart tunes but they did give me a quick flashback. THe station appears to be programmed for a 35 year old person and personally I think it is pretty much on target. There are armchair quaretback in every game guys and that is OK. I live in the midwest and wish we had a station that was live (most of the time) in our community. The morning and afternon guys are pretty good and that midday guy does a real smooth job also. Look around your market, if it's like where I live, there are more voice tracked shifts than there are live ones. What do I know, I've been out of the business for some time but I know what sounds good to me!

I'll agree with you here. These songs are a problem. The key on playing deeper cuts is that they still need to be close to 100% familiar. Those would not qualify.

"Simon" is a good example of a station that can play seemingly non-compatible songs and make it work, because all the songs are familiar to the target audience. Their ratings are very good.

I believe the Adult Hits format is the NEW Oldies for a saleable (ratings) audience. Classic Hits in general is a band-aid
for traditional Oldies stations, although it does work in some markets. If you look around the country, while many
Jack-FMs don't appear to have big 12+ numbers, they rank very high 25-54.
 
I'm pretty impressed with the music on Simon. I think their new PD is doing a great job. I really like hearing the "off the wall" stuff they throw in. One morning I heard the "Time Warp". Talk about a flashback! Looks like his efforts are paying off with ratings. The morning show is also now listenable, which was never the case with the old show, IMO. Also, I seldom hear anything I'm not familiar with on Simon.
