WTHZ Upgrade

Whatever happened to WTHZ moving closer to Charlotte? Has that been called off, or what? Haven't heard anything on it in a long time. Maybe after they get things ironed out with the new Oldies format they'll get back on it.

County commissioners would not approve the zoning. Sale was depentant on upgrade. Sale never happened.

I understand that CC still owns the old WFMX transmitter site, and they would likely not sell it knowing that another broadcaster could put an antenna on it and be competition in two of their markets.

What about the old WRFX site in southern Rowan County? I know they abandoned that site long ago, took the tower down and donated it to WDAV...but if the zoning variance they got 15 years ago for that site is still on the books, it might be worth a look-see. GHattaway, any light you could shed on that?

Shortspacings.

There's a 93.9 in Virginia's mountains; a 93.9 to the east; a 94.1 below Greenville (yes it's protected in NC) and a 104.7 to the south. The site they picked with the power level chosen was the best the could do. The WRFX site wouldn't work. WRFX is too close to 104.7 and the old WFMX site could work if it was directional, but it still wouldn't be as powerful as WFMX was. Sometime soon, 93.9 will move to Cary and signal will improve to the east. Maybe Hitz can make a small adjustment too as a C1? Then Hitz 94 will cover all the Triad's large cities.

I thought it had not been long since they did a tower upgrade from Midway to Reedy Creek NC. Did that not happen?

I do know that WTHZ and WFDD are still on the same tower outside of Welcome, south of Winston-Salem. I think they have both been at that location for quite sometime

Something intersting would be to know the history behind 94.1...from beginning - today. Tower/transmitter wise ;)

As best as I know the history, the original calls were WBUY-FM, and it was simulcast with WBUY(am). The two stations aired an adult-contemporary format, later switching to Peters Productions' "The Natural Sound" A/C-Country hybrid.

Original power was 3kw and upped to 10kw sometime in the 70's. Also in the early 70's, the calls of the FM were changed to WLXN, but it remained simulcast with the AM 24/7 until about 1977, when the FM was separated mid-days to air religious programming.

In 1986, call letters and formats were separated and flipped, with WLXN becoming a religious station on 1440 and WBUY becoming a country format on 94.1. Later, the calls on the FM were changed again to WKOQ, keeping the country format.

By 1990 (exact year uncertain), another format flip happened in the station, with WLXN becoming A/C/News/Talk. New calls were again put on the FM, which became WWGL and the religious format moved back to 94.1. I think it was about the time of this change that the FM was moved to Welcome and boosted to 100kw.

Since that time, four formats have come and gone, from Religious/Southern Gospel to Contemporary Christian music under the WWGL calls, All-80's and Hot A/C under the WTHZ calls.

That's what I remember of the station from my travels through the area in the 70's and 80's, and my time living in Lexington in the 90's.

Here's what I remember. WLXN-FM was religious prior to 1984. I also remember their tower fell down in a storm; I saw a newspaper photo.

I think it was 1984 when they became WKOQ and they went country at that time. WBUY may have become WLXN then. I think it switched to religious.

The switch to WWGL came in 1988. I called the station, when I was living in High Point, to complain too many people were playing country. What do you suggest, the guy asked. I knew WBIG, one of the other country stations, had been religious prior to 1987 and, except for WHPE, no religious station reached the entire area or could be heard most places at night. The guy said well, that's what we'll do. No one else has cared enough to tell us what to do.

That's seriously what they did! WLXN changed to full-service soft rock.
