WTIC Adds Smerconish... Possible Rush Replacement?

I understand WTIC just picked up Smerconish for weekends. Wonder if it's a potential "plan B" in the event that A) if Clear Channel, which owns the show, decides to yank it for use on a new talk station they plan to put together, or B) the next time Rush says something so divisive and controversial that WTIC can plug Smerconish right in, if need be.

Guess what time Smerconish's live daily show is? Yep, 12 Noon to 3 PM - right up against El Rushbo. Perhaps if WTIC didn't pick up the show so soon after Flukegate, it wouldn't be questioned. The timing is very curious.

Allow me to slow down this "Rush" to judgment here.

First, Dave Ramsey will now have a much more consistent clearance in a weekday time slot on a four-station network, all on day pattern. While 50K, WTIC only offered weekend playback with frequent preemptions. In Ramsey's case, the move makes total sense.

I've seen more of Michael Smerconish - thanks to MSNBC - than heard him. He does a nice job there, but that along with his local talk show in Philadephia do not make him el Rushbo's heir apparent. One criticism of Smerconish offered by a GM I know is that he is too moderate or analytical for the regular lineup of a conservative talk station. They want the "red meat" issues, not the "that didn't occur to me, caller" guys. In other words, he is no Rush, Hannity or Beck. That's no putdown. I couldn't replace Rush either (I'm OK with that).

Love them or hate them, Rush and company's success with a desired target audience would take a very sustained loss of listenership, advertisers and affiliates to change that. Much of their base wonders what all the fuss is about. They are the ones who pay attention to Rush day in and day out. When those "Imus moments" go viral outside the core listenership, then you get the boycott threats. We'll see what happens, but two small affiliates dumping Rush doesn't exactly signal a mass defection.

If WTIC did lose Rush - a big IF - then it wouldn't be much of a stretch to envision them being local throughout the day similar to WPRO in Providence. Remember after the 2011 storms? That was a ready made reason to program locally. WPRO's success against mostly syndicated WHJJ provides other compelling reasons. The comparison has its limitations, though. In this Land of Steady Habits, don't look for a change tomorrow.

Another "heir-apparent" to Rush is Mike Huckabee, whose show is slated air in April and has according to this site, 110 stations ready to air it from noon to 3. Huckabee would be another perfect addition to any radio lineup tailor made for low-information viewers, as given his shtick on Fox.

When CBS's Pittsburgh Talk station 1020 KDKA lost Rush to a new Clear Channel FM Talker, KDKA simply made the time slot local. I'd guess that KDKA has older demos but it's usually ranked #2 in Pittsburgh with the upstart Clear Channel FM Talker, 104.7 WPGB, around #5.

I'm inclined to think that WTIC only runs a syndicated show at noon BECAUSE it's Rush. If Clear Channel ever pulled him off WTIC or Rush implodes, WTIC would likely go local in that time slot.

And the scenario of Clear Channel putting an FM Talk station in Hartford to be built around Rush is less likely, now that the company just started up an FM Sports station. I doubt they'd blow up WWYZ, WKSS or WHCN for Talk since they're all doing well.

The only scenario I could see would be WHYN-FM being made into a Clear Channel FM Talk station, targeting both Hartford and Springfield, with 560 WHYN going Sports. But many parts of the Hartford market (which includes New Britain and Middletown) can't get WHYN-FM as they get WTIC. So that doesn't seem much of an idea.

I can't see CC blowing up one of its successful music stations to start a new talker just to placate Rush should WTIC dump him. As I mentioned earlier, Huckabee starts in April and Smerconish also airs from noon to three, should TIC ever smarten up and drop the drug addled gas-bag.

But tell us how you really feel about Rush... ;D

I was not necessarily anointing Smerconish or Huckabee or anyone as the "heir apparent" to Rush when he still has another four years (or a full Presidential term) left on his contract. And being an alternative to Rush in recent years is not pretty territory... remember Fred Thompson? Again, I was merely questioning the timing of WTIC just now adding Smerconish (albeit on weekends) amid the Rush/Sandra Fluke/sponsorships dropping like flies business.

Smerconish Is just filler replacing Dave Ramsey, who is now getting full weekday clearance on WDRC.

Local content would be the more likely replacement for Rush. I'd bet on a midday all-news block, or shifting of State and Church, or extending of Vice, or a combination.

Or move "Church and State" to middays, and give Vicevich afternoons - either in Rush's slot or a perhaps later and/or longer show (not sure if he'd be up to an extended shift with his recent health problems) and bring back the "total news" late afternoon block... Another possibility...

Too bad that Bruce Stephens and Colin McEnroe are employed elsewhere or TIC could bring them back. Better yet, they should have never dumped them in the first place.
