WTIC-FM between classical and top 40

While we're discussing old Hartford formats, does anyone remember what format WTIC-FM had after they dropped Classical and before they went Top 40?

"Romantic FM".

It was a sappy easy-listening format that was short-lived and basically unlistenable. (Now watch someone who programmed it might chip in here and defend it.) I've seen online references to WTIC-FM going from Classical to Top 40 and it wasn't that way.

It was still a shock to hear "TIC-FM" jingles on what was formerly a classical station.

They suck now.....

On the weekends they do 80s music and most of it is played SLIGHTLY FASTER THAN ITS SUPPOSED TO BE! (Like WVCR)

Probably not as shocking as many New Yorkers were to wake up to 104.3 on the morning of 12/18/93 and hear AC/DC! ;D

Is it worth mentioning that they became a Top 40 station around June of 1977? I remember night jock Mike West mentioning something like that once. It was when he was leaving that time slot and AJ was taking it over. AJ Hammer would later appear on VH1 and then CNN Headline News as an entertainment reporter. The last time I heard "Westie", he was with WCTK-FM 98.1 ("Cat Country") over in New Bedford/Providnece.

Are you sure it wasnt WKSS 95.7 you are talking about? They had that muzak like format until about 1984. Elevator music...

100.5 ("Rich") was like that too for years...

Ugh!

I'm not confusing WKSS with WTIC-FM. WTIC-FM was indeed "Romantic FM" for a time before flipping to Top 40.

So there were three easy-listening FMs in the Hartford area for a short time--WRCH-FM, WKSS and WTIC-FM. WRCH-FM was Bonneville, WKSS was Schulke, probably the superior of the two, but I think WRCH-FM got better ratings. I don't know if WTIC-FM used a national service or whether "Romantic FM" was home-grown.

I always thought it funny that the WKSS call letters and "Kiss" moniker were used so long with the easy-listening format and then were perfectly acceptable when they changed to Top 40, with all the other "Kiss" formats around the country at that time. Same call letters and slogan, very different formats.

I was a kid, and never noticed the classical on WTIC-FM. I do remember the "beautiful music," which was horrifically misnamed, especially following classical. I remember Floyd Richards announcing, middays, I think, after the Bob Steele simulcast.

Kiss was actually listenable when Dick Bertel came on board and they added "personality," along with a few vocals.

Bill Lenke was the first jock I heard on 96 TICS, my first real exposure to Top 40 radio, and a serious shock after what had been on before. I thought it was the most ridiculous thing I'd ever heard, and I couldn't stop listening. Awesome.

You've got the Beautiful Music stations mixed up. WRCH was Shulke, and WKSS was Bonneville. I thought WTIC-FM went from classical directly to "Feels Like The First Time" by Foreigner.
