WTIC-FM NEW ANTENNA:ONLINE

This week on Tuesday WTIC-FM began operation from its new main panel antenna which, aside from being designed to accomodate HD Radio operation, has some really nice design improvements over the 30 year old antenna that it replaced.

I would welcome any comments on signal reception, multipath, better, worse, unchanged, etc at [email protected]

Happy Holidays

Jeff,

It sounds great up here in Northampton! Less drop outs and multi path as I drove from Springfield to Northampton the other afternoon.

Unless you've got an HD radio, will there really be much difference in greater Hartford? My one area of concern is the signal overload you get in the area of West Peak in Meriden near the Westfield Shoppingtown (a.k.a. Meriden Mall). To now, WTIC-FM and WCCC-FM has always been iffy with my Sony Walkman while there.

THE NEW WTIC-FM HYBRID ANTENNA still obeys the same physics of the last antenna, so our coverage is largely identical. Greater hartford I'm not anticipating any change, except for some potential reduction in multipath.

However, this new ERI panel incorporates some sexy design improvements over its 30 year old predecessor. Among other vastly different design changes in the driven elements, it has "Wings" that extend the backplane screens on each of the edges which smooth the pattern and offer notable improvement in overall circularity/axial ratio. Additionally, the antenna has been slightly optimised in the vertical plane only, southerly, (mostly southwest) at the expense of some west, northwesterly Vert plan coverage over low population areas.

These optimizations are minor, but I am quite curious if they are noticable over time. The fact is the old radiated pattern had much harder "edges".

To be honest, I think your newer signal at my home in New Britain's south end is worse, with the same 4 foot wire antenna I've been using for the last three years on my Sony stereo with 5 disc carousel and spectrum display. The reception on every other FM station which didn't move or change their tranismitters (see WAAF-FM 107.3 of Westborough, MA) is still the same.<P ID="signature">______________
