WTIC-FM TODAY IS LAME

I'm listening to TIC-FM on the net as a write this post...what a lame station. It's vanilla like NYC's WPLJ. Back in the day when my brother's firm was consulting WTIC-AM & FM, TIC-AM would be #1 with a 14 share and the FM #2 with a 12 share. Miss those full page ads in Radio & Records saluting WTIC AM & FM by the Research Group.

Springfield out!

The magic time of 96 TIC-FM was so freakin' wonderful! Gimme the days of Mike West, A.J., Al Levine and the booming voiceovers of the late Ernie Anderson! Now THAT was my station! ;D

Things changed as soon as WTIC-FM changed to a Hot AC station in 1994. As for WTIC-AM, don't get me started on their awful sound quality of 2008. ::)

TIC-FM needs to do some major spring cleaning. Can Craig and put Damon Scott in mornings. Update wayback weekends. So forth.

The FM signal sound the same for me here in New Britain. It's the AM side of the hallway that needs its equipment checked and PRONTO!

In my youth TIC was still hip. I'd suggest renaming the station 96TIC-FM and make it sound like a European CHR. I think American radio just got dull in the 1990's. Damon is witty and a good host but I can't listen to him with everything else about the station including the music so drab.

But it's "the best of the 80's, 90's and today", Marc.

Why the hate for Soft Cell?

Although I will concur that it probably was not the extended version that samples the Supremes at the end.

Here, here! I'd love a station like like Capital 95.8 London to spring up on this side of the pond. Unfortunately, the stream is no longer available to anyone outside of the UK anymore :(

kms - what makes you say that? I've listened to Capital in the past, and when you said that I went to their website and opened their stream with no problems...

also replying to another post, 'tainted love' is one of the best songs TIC-FM plays.

At one time, maybe 2 years ago now, commercial radio was not allowed to stream outside of the UK. I guess the issues have been resolved. I'm listening to 95.8 now loud and clear. The sound quality is incredible!

Hartford commerical radio is for the vanilla Marty McGillucudies. "96 Ticks" was probably the height of its popularity, when top-40 radio actually meant something to the youths. They let the wrong people program and run these stations...people who think "new and fresh ideas" are to bore people to death.

Very good point. 96.5 TICS in the 70's was a great station. Today it's just a bunch of liner readers.
G Craig has got to have the biggest snoozefest on Hartford radio. Does anyone listen to his show and if so, my next question is..............WHY?????????? ::) ::) ::)

I loved, loved, loved 96 TICs. But it was nowhere near the peak of popularity for the station. That came in the mid 80's under PD Garry Wall, with Craig in the morning, Jane Welsh middays (I think), Neil Jackson in the afternoon and Westy at night (and music director). The core of Craig, Jackson and West were so popular, it seemed TIC-FM might finally beat WTIC-AM! They did pull some double-digit books. Ironically (or not; it goes against common assumptions though), TIC-FM had its highest numbers after WKSS changed format to 95.7 Kiss-FM.

The way they used to be at each other throats was sooooooo fun! Thanks to CBS and Clear Channel, that'll never happen again! SIGH! :(

Re: WTIC-FM TODAY IS LAME?

Yes, WTIC-FM was stronger in the eighties than their early "hot hits" days in the late seventies. In 1977, it filled a format hole in the market you could drive a truck through on a dial filled with easy listening instrumentals and album rock. Competition tightened in the wighties, and TIC-FM more than met the challenge. After faltering in the early nineties, it evolved into a hot AC. It may not be the same 96 TICS you fondly remember, but the times and the market have changed. Bill Lenke won't be "gettin' tall and slammed against the wall" talking up Kenny Rogers' "Lucille" again anytime soon.

I don't see how anyone could call WTIC-FM a liner card operation. It's got an afternoon drive show full of morning show elements, and the weekenders sound happy as clams to be there. It may not be the CBS cluster's top draw 12-plus, but hot AC does score with key demographics. If it didn't, I don't think CBS would be in any mood to avoid making changes... and those changes may not mean bringing in more talent. You could do a whole lot worse.

If I have to listen to CBS Radio, I'll still take WTIC-FM over sister stations WRCH-FM (Yawn!) and WTIC-AM (Please fix that sound!).

Well, now that WBMX is streaming, I'll take that any over WTIC. IMHO, I think 'TIC should strive to be more like Mix.
