WTIX-FM

I was listening to WTIX-FM (a station that I have only recently "discovered") while painting my kitchen the other night, and I have to say, I'm surprised they aren't doing better. Sure, "oldies" obviously isn't everyone's niche, but the variety on this station is better than on any other station in New Orleans, in my opinion. 50's through 80's....I can't think of anyone else who would spin the Diamonds, Wham, the Beatles, Eddie Rabbitt, the Jackson 5, and 1960s Dolly Parton in the same playlist let alone the same hour. It's like all the old songs Magic 101.9 and Kool 95.7 used to play (before succumbing to bloodless, soulless corporations) have all migrated to WTIX for refuge.

Sometimes I wonder if this WTIX will someday share the same fate of Magic, Kool, and others.....i.e., being swallowed up by corporate radio and losing any sense of uniqueness whatsoever. Hopefully, that will never happen. Can anyone tell me more about this station? Any predictions for its future? Are there any rumors of the owners selling it in the near future? I'm just wondering, because the station itself seems too good to be true.

first off the station is owned by mike costello. he use to own wrno back in the 80s. the station is his personal jukebox. he plays the songs he likes and doesnt care about what corporate radio is doing. the station has been on for years and has never had much ratings success. but ratings arent everything. as long as he can pay the bills he will keep it on. i seriously doubt he ever sells it. he plays the osmonds--crazy horses. my favorite song fromn 1972. from their all rock lp crazy horses...no one else does outside of utah! hes ok in my book. but lots of people on here cant stand him or his station. its really a clone of the mighty 690 wtix from the 1970s..before corporate radio destroyed am/fm radio..if he ever does sell it. just get xm..the 70s on 7 and 60s on 6 also play all the music...

From the people I've talked to, sometimes the music is what turns them off,or at least the way it's presented. There is little advertising that I'm aware of,of the station as of late so that may also count against him.
But WTIX-Fm could be considered one of the first "Jacks" out there:)

But If it compares to the original mighty 690 or not, you be the judge..There are scoped and unscoped recordings of the Mighty 690 out there including 7 on reelradio.com that date from 1962-1972.

I, too, am a huge fan of WTIX-fm. I'm a Louisiana native who, in my teen years, loved the old battles between TIX and WNOE. (I was always a fan of 'NOE). Moved away from Louisiana after grad school, and have lived all over the mid-Atlantic and N'East, with the last 17 years being spent in NYC (listening to WCBSfm, before it was "hiJACKED"), and then moving back to the Northshore almost 2 years ago, I found WTIX fm about 7 years ago as I was DXing on my rental car after leaving the New Orleans Airport. I was hooked. Loved it immediately! I mean, I still remember hearing Bobby Reno, I believe, play John Fred's "Moonpie" song. Now living in Ponchatoula, TIX-fm is barely listenable, but I manage to catch it on good days and leave it on as long as I can. The number of "Oh Wow!" songs that they play is greater than any other "oldies" station I've ever heard. On trips down to N.O. where the reception makes it a very listenable station, the dial rarely changes. Yeah, I know they voicetrack, but, so what! For me, it's fun radio!

BTW, is Michael Costello, one and the same as "Michael in the Morning"? Just wondering. . .

Well this is what discussion is about, I have to disagree with all of these post... please I dislike corporate radio as much as everyone but WTIX-FM is easily the worst sounding radio station in the world.
 
Im amazed Mike Costello hasnt sold WTIX-FM to Crap Channel, Chitadel etc. Its noble that he keeps doing this Wide Oldies format when he could still make a quick bundle selling his stations.

I just got a tape of the station and it sounds the same way it did when I visited N.O. in early 2002 for a convention, except the automation sounded tighter. The guy was doing music Jack FM style before anyone else.

I wish Costello would spend a little $$$ and get a the station good jingle package instead of those AM jingles with the "TIX-FM" spliced on.
