WTJK 105.3 now La Poderosa 105.3

Grace Broadcasting has changed formats on WTJK 105.3 Humboldt, going from Fox Sports to Spanish as La Poderosa 105.3. Fox Sports has been moved to WJPJ 1190 and its translator at 99.9. Just discovered this by accident on the WNWS website.

September 15, 2012 - then-WTJW changes format from news/talk to contemporary Christian, branded as "The Dove", under new calls of WDVW.

January 1, 2015 - WDVW changes to classic hits as "Hippie Radio 105.3", with a calls change to WHPP.

January 9, 2018 - WHHP changes calls to WTJK.

January 15, 2018 - WTJK changes format from classic hits to talk.

April 20, 2018 - WTJK changes format from talk (which moved to WTJS 93.1 FM Alamo) to sports, branded as "Fox Sports Jackson".

September 14, 2022 - WTJK changes format from sports (which moved to WJPJ 1190 AM/99.9 FM Humboldt) to Regional Mexican, branded as "La Poderosa 105.3".

There's a large enough Hispanic population in West TN now to justify having a station. But who knows how long it will last with all the changes on 103.3 in recent years?

As long as Rogelio pays the bills. I'm sure that's what's driving this change.

Yep, almost certainly a sign of a station in trouble. Most stations don't flip this often. From radio-locator.com

105.3 did good until Forever got the idea of making it part of the TJ Network, which I always thought was a bad idea, and it still is in its current form. Unfortunately Grace hasn't been able to keep any format there very long since they bought it.

Does anyone here know what is going on at Grace? I mean, WTJS has been operating under an STA at reduced power for over 1 year after the lightning strike. Are they close to rebuilding the tower at Bells? How well does WNWS really do? The local talk is all well and good, but it's labor intensive to have that airstaff, and not being in Jackson myself, I really have no idea how they're doing billing or ratings-wise. 105.3 hasn't done anything since Darrell Boyd sold it years ago. It's a shame, because Jackson could be a good market, but it looks like Forever dominates, and Southern Stone has Kix 96 and Hot 96.1, and then the leftovers.

The tower is back up, I don't know if the cellular part is back on or not. The signal for 93.1 is definitely too weak to be coming from it. I don't know where exactly they're actually transmitting from. If or when they go back to full power I don't know what to expect if there will be a format change or not. They had announced a change back to News/Talk in the Spring (which we don't another one.) but it didn't happen, and hopefully it won't. But I won't be surprised if the CCM format is just filler until they're back on full power.

This may be first FM station (in a town of its size, anyway) to do a full-time Spanish format. Here in Nashville, we have a few FMs broadcasting Spanish-language programming, but I believe that they are all translators. I'm not aware of any Spanish-language programming originating from an FM signal here.

I think you're right as far as West TN goes. There are a couple in East TN. Time will tell if this works, because their claim of 30k Hispanic population may be for all of West TN, but in the listenable part of their signal, it's more like 8k. Hardly enough to get rich on. However, I stand by my original belief that Rogelio Garcia is footing the bills, and that if he hadn't come along, they would still be sports. This too shall pass.

I would actually be okay with this if it meant that there would be fewer such flips going forward. Some stations flip so often that it becomes a joke with listeners.

The only tower I can think of that fits the general area in their paperwork is the tower on F.E. Wright Drive that K-Love has their translator on. The roads look similar when you zoom in on Google Maps. Not sure what tower that is though. It looks like Way-FM also is on there.

That may be right. All I really knew is that they were transmitting from somewhere in Jackson. Thanks!
