WTJS in Jackson on 105.3?

I noticed in yesterday's Jackson Sun that WTJS 1390 was advertising that they were now also on 105 FM. I flipped across the dial today and found out that 105.3 had fipped to simulcast with WTJS. How long has this been going on? I'll admit I didn't listen to them regularly, but I did flip across the dial and land on them occasionally. I've had some other thoughts:

What is Forever thinking in flipping the only CHR station in Jackson? Will some other station flip to CHR now?

What is the point of their having the translator on 94.1 carrying 92.3? They bought the translator from WAY-FM. It would have made some sense to simulcast 1390 from there, since putting a low power AM station is being allowed in some places, and it would have increased the coverage at night. As it stands now this translator is being wasted carrying 92.3 since it doesn't increase their coverage. I wish WAY-FM had kept the translator and done something with it.

Finally, WHY does Jackson need THREE FM news/talk stations, especially when 105.3 is doing nothing but simulcasting 1390? To me most FM talk is a waste of a frequency that could be used for some music format that isn't being done in the area, and news/talk belongs on AM.

This doesn't seem to be too bright an idea to me, but then I'm only a listener.

I guess that 105 was tanking in ratings and listenership, so maybe they figured "What The Hell?"
I'm not big on FM talkers either, but with all these HD stations on the same frequencies and etc...you're liable to find anything anywhere now.

So there's no CHR in Jackson? There is an Urban station though, correct?

From what I can remember...and this was a while ago...that station was highly rated.

Highly rated from the "get-go!"
at Q102 back in the day, we steady beat 92.3.
Beating "SuperWolf's" station was another deal altogether.
Could have had something to do with the "Urban" headstart...but they were the perennial ratings leader back then, for sure.

I personally don't think that FM talkers are a waste...

considering that 101.5 is constantly in the top 2 in Jackson... and in the smaller markets that surround us, it only makes sense. the AM's don't have a strong enough signal to cover an area large enough to justify the talk with the advertisers..

let's face it. Forever firmly set their sights on overcoming WWYN, and they did... now they are going to try to do the same thing against NewsTalk and SuperTalk.

never mind the fact that they could have taken a CHR station, mixed in a bit of Urban and given Kix the compitition that they really need. right now they are the "perennial leader" and they need someone to shake things up.

hey meep, I've actually got a couple of Q102 license plates floating around somewhere, my Grandmother lived in Humboldt and never threw anything out.

I found out today that 94.3 in Dyer is now simulcasting 1390 as well. Now the Jackson area has FOUR FM news/talk stations. How much worse is this going to get? ???

Does it really count as an additional station if all they are doing is simulcasting an already existing station?

I remember when 94.3 and 105.3 used to flip formats at 6pm every night (this was about 10-12 years ago) and play a more alternative playlist. I can't recall what they did during the day...maybe it was more AC or Hot AC, but after 6pm, they went to some sort of satellite and played a quite a bit of alternative.

I thoroughly enjoyed, and looked forward, to hearing those stations at night. We were limited on that type of music in West TN, so it was nice to be able to keep up with the rest of the world. ;)

Perhaps not technically, but it's still another waste of an FM frequency. Forever has flipped 94.3 more than any other station they bought in West TN. It's gone from simulcasting 105.3 when it was CHR, to simulcasting country from 104.1, then 1190 AM from Humboldt, and now to news/talk with 1390 and 105.3.

Sometimes I think Forever makes Doc Flinn in Memphis look like a programming genius.  ::)

Well this new TJ Network 94.3,105.3,1390 it just sucks I dont think it should hurt WNWS 101.5 and SuperTalk
give me a break!!!!!!!! The only good on their station is the Sports Beat program and I give it a 7.5

We can quote you on this right? ;)

I'm sorry but I just have trouble taking any of FUN's post seriously anymore. Ever since his push for Tony Greene for severe weather reporting that's the first thing I think of when I see his name.

They have packaged 105.3, 94.3, and 1390 and are marketing it as "the TJ Network".....certainly an inexpensive way to operate 3 stations.

...and waste 2 FM stations that could be used for something else that isn't already being done in Jackson or West TN. :-\

I wonder if what we are seeing in this market is really just a sign of things to come? the industry keeps talking that Talk is the future on the FM dial...maybe Jackson is ahead of the curve!

That is a statement that I never thought I would hear. I did take a little time about a week ago while in the area to listen to all 3 FM talkers. They all seemed OK. 105.3 was running a network feed of a conservative talk show host. 101.5 was doing what seemed like a local talk/sports talk program. 97.7 had a local guy interviewing someone with what seemed kind of like church related issues. They each seemed to be reaching for a different audience. I think that may be the trend as news/talk develops into separate categories. I don't think you can lump them all together anymore. More and more people enjoy talk radio and so you have to begin breaking it down to reach your desired demo. Again, this was a snapshot but they all seemed pretty good to me. Just not used to 3 FM talkers in a market. Maybe it is a sign of things to come. I do know from talking to someone that the music license fees are substantially less for talkers. A friend I have in managing a station in a little larger market than Jackson had told me that they spent in excess of $2000 per month on a single station for the music license fees. Ouch!!!
