WTKK: Will Greater Media blow it up?

Would Greater Media blow up WTKK if it continues to do poorly in the ratings? Seems like it's neck and neck with old, staticey WRKO and should be way ahead. I still think a Spanish CHR would do amazingly well in Boston. Would Greater Media consider something like that? They must be paying a lot of dough for Baude, Eagan, and Graham anyway. And, of course, the payroll would increase if they go for, heaven forbid, Howie Carr.

Dave

Greater Media probably won't try CHR again as they failed in Philadelphia with it :) They'd probably not do so well with something like Urban or Rhythmic either...

With two FM sports stations already (WBZ-FM and WEEI-FM), I can't see a third one in Boston anytime soon...

i agree i would like to see it go away as well, but as you say its lame and boring radio here!! i would like something new and different like an urban ac or another top 40 to challenge kiss/jamn!!

I'm way up in Maine and don't listen to Boston talk radio regularly (except for Howie, whom we get up here on a local station); what are everyone's insights as to why the format isn't doing well in Boston?
Just curious.

Older listeners/PPMs? Talk getting older demos.

Too many stations (conservative)? (I could almost picture having 2 strong stations among
WTKK, WRKO, or WXKS rather than all 3; and we can't forget WBZ is there too with Rea, etc.)
The sports talkers (Sports Hub, WEEI) may do fairly well though, perhaps taking listeners
from "news talk". (For the liberals there's WWZN and NPR--though maybe some, or moderates,
may enjoy Jim and Margery or Smerconish)

btw I guess Doug Meehan of WTKK is auditioning to perhaps replace Regis Philbin? Wonder if he'll get the job. He may get squeezed out in the fall anyway in the (unlikely but who knows) event that
WTKK might hire Howie for am or pm drive. (Howie may wind up back at RKO again but anything could happen, and Meehan could get squeezed out. Or maybe sent to early evenings.)

maybe if WTKK reporgramed their schedule, maybe they would last longer.
There's a great (hour) talk show on "Big City 101.3" weekday mornings around 8am. They have a lot of topics. Not just one topic. Lots of topics. Too bad either 96.9 or WRKO can't give them a slot, at least a 3 hour slot on weekdays/weeknights, or weekend days/weekend nights

There are a lot of Talk Shows/Programs out there, if 96.9 could look into those programs and adjust their programming, they can last
same with WRKO

Adult CHR rather, I think it was between Smooth Jazz and The Fanatic, from summer 2008 to late 2009 :)

WTKK seems happy with the morning show. As for Meehan, he was hired to replace Jay Severin in pm drive--but as soon as the news broke that WXKS had hired Jay, WTKK immediately changed
the lineup to put politics-heavy Michael Graham in pm drive opposite Howie and Jay, with Meehan doing later mornings. Then they have Smerconish, Graham, the Wall St Journal wrapup show, John Batchelor, and Overnight America.
(Not long after WTKK switched Phil Hendrie to weekends only and put John and Jeff in the
weeknight overnight slot, John and Jeff discontinued their show so they had to pick up Overnight America to replace it).

What changes can be made to their lineup? If they were to get Howie that would shake it up
a bit. I don't know what else could be done--they prob would leave am drive and pm drive alone,
exc. for poss. adding of Howie if they signed him...what other shakeups could be done?

They can start by moving their morning show back to a 6 a.m. start. In fact in this day and age of earlier and earlier commutes, I would think radio would be going the way of TV early morning newscasts and moving towards 4:30 a.m. Instead, WTKK moves Egan and Braude to 7 a.m.

Isn't the whole idea of the morning show to grab listener’s attention so they will keep the station tuned in for later programming? If I have just left my house and watched 30 minutes or so of NECN's morning news, I'm not going to continue listening to it in my car. After 30 minutes, unless there is a big breaking news story, the stories are pretty much being regurgitated over and over.

Not exactly a reason for me to tune into WTKK.

Oh vomit. Something "new" and "exciting" like CHR? You've gotta be kidding me. If there were more CHR stations everyone would be bitching about how boring Boston radio is with too many CHR's.

I have a feeling that these "boring" claims are just from people who crave turmoil.

Here's a thought. How about WTKK becoming a Hot AC station with an Urban slant since nobody around here wants to go full Urban AC.

This would draw listeners from WBMX and WJMN. Songs from the '80s till now with an Urban slant. With a soft Urban show at night. 8 PM -1 AM. It could work.

Hmmm...could Boston handle a third sports station? Somehow I wouldn't think so, but I recall there was much speculation the last time the rights for the Sox games came up that Greater Media was indicating interest in trying to get the rights away from Entercom, and that was (partly) the reason why Entercom paid such a fortune for them.

Keep in mind, though, that was in the era of ESPN 890 vs. WEEI, long before the Sports Hub launched and before WEEI was on FM. It was more than speculation that Greater Media was interested -- in fact, Greater Media was willing to let the Red Sox take an ownership stake in a pre-Radio 92.9 WBOS, which appealed greatly. Entercom was unwilling to go that far.

(add sports talk to the "almost was" list for WBOS, which also includes near-changes to Jammin' Oldies and FM Talk)

I never suggested CHR. But there's a void in the market for a good strong FM Spanish station. I think it's only a matter of time before Boston gets a Spanish CHR or Spanish Hot AC.
