WTKS Savannah Translator Booming at 97.7

The long aticipated launch of the companion translator for WTKS (1290AM) Savannah has occured and the station is now on the air. When you compare the coverage, loudness and overall impact of this one (97.7) to the other one launched early in the year (104.3) which simulcasts 1400 AM, there really is no comparison actually. WTKS is strong in most of the southern half of Effingham County, a weak spot for the 1290 signal as it has a sharp null right across Highway 21. The antenna hangs around 500' with 250 watts and since this is a fairly clean frequency, the coverage is way beyond their expectations. So give CC credit for getting N/T on the FM band without devoting a full stick to do it. This coverage should be a significant boost for their future in the format.....Craig Scott

On which tower is the antenna located?

Also, i was receiving it all the way down to the McIntosh County line this morning. Removal of the stereo would improve reception even more (no need for stereo on a N/T).

I think it's on the same tower with the 104.3 translator about 2 miles southwest of downtown. There are two towers next to each other...if it's an AM tower array, its no longer being used.

And absolutely need to get rid of that stereo! You're talking class A signal with that translator! Problem is many of the cheaper low powered TXs can't have stereo turned of without real internal modifications...

On my drive home tonight, I noticed the stereo is off! This little translator booms!

This morning I picked up 97.7 along Hwy 119 in and around Springfield, Guyton, and Stilson. It faded into 98Q from Vidalia at Stilson in southeastern Bulloch County.

Apparently engineering hit a grand slam. Areas which could not get a good quality signal from 1290 are now able to hear the station around the clock.

Doesn't the translator need to ID itself at the top of the hour? If so, it's not.

We should be hearing something like, "WTKS AM Savannah, W249BS Savannah".

Identification of translator and booster stations. Translator stations must be identified by the licensee by the following means:

... by arranging with the primary station whose signal is being rebroadcast to identify the translator by call sign and location. The identification must occur 3 times daily: once between 7 AM and 9 AM, once between 12:55 PM and 1:05 PM, and once between 4 PM and 6 PM. Stations that do not begin operating before 9 AM must provide the identification at the beginning of the broadcast day. The licensee of the translator station must arrange for the primary station to keep in the primary FM station's file (and to make available to FCC personnel), the call sign and location of the translator station. This record must include the name, address, and telephone number of the translator licensee or his service representative to be contacted in the case of a malfunction of the translator. See 47 CFR Section 74.1283(c)(1).

... by transmitting the call sign in Morse Code at least once hour. See 47 CFR Section 74.1283(c)(2) for additional requirements for transmission of the call sign in this manner.
