WTMC

WTMC has made an application to move off of the WILM tower to a location near the Wilmington Airport, dropping power to 250 watts daytime/10 watts night. The tower apparently be a Valcom unit, nothing much more fancier than a fiber glass pole. If they're set up right, they do work, which you can hear one in action on WFYL-1180. Wonder how much longer WTMC will exist as states are doing all the budget cuts, is it REALLY needed at all?

Dave, was it ever needed - at all? It's just a recorded loop of scheduled road repairs and constructions. Current traffic conditions are aired on stations affiliated with Shadow/Metro's Traffax plus a few stations which do their own traffic reports. It's a good AM signal going to waste. I doubt the state spends much money on it, beyond the electric bill for the transmitter.

As I recall this has been mentioned before, but Delaware is the only state without its own public radio station. Yes, WHYY maintains a presence and others have repeaters in Delaware but still... Give WTMC to the University of Delaware or some local foundation and do real public radio. Toss in WVUD and switch it over to public radio (an add a low power community FM station to take over WVUD's current function) and you might have something. Question is: For all the complaining I read about Delaware's paucity of local news media, would Delaware companies provide underwriting and Delaware listeners contribute?
