WTMJ 4 in Boston

As I was watching WBZ News at Noon, I could see a shadow from something on another station. I caught an ID logo, and it said TMJ 4! This must be WTMJ from Milwaukee! I think this is the farthest I've ever gotten! How could this happen?

The international Cheese Head conspiracy? ;-)

Sporadic-E. Boston<=>Milwaukee is just about the perfect distance for this. (I grew up in Milwaukee & used to see WGBH about once every summer. There is no channel 2 station in Milwaukee to interfere.)

Basically, the layer of the atmosphere that's occasionally responsible for "skiptalk" on CB radio becomes hyper-active and reflects much higher frequencies. On better days, even FM radio can be affected. (and that happened tonight)

I used to catch WGBH Boston at least once every summer, and it would obliterate my local CBS station, WBBM-TV Chicago. I've also had WCBS New York a few times, but never with the full-quieting audio and clean color that I would get with WGBH. WBBM-TV (2) and WMAQ-TV (5) are a little tougher to DX because they're limited on power. That's the "price" stations have to pay for the luxury of being atop tall buildings like the Sears Tower and John Hancock Center. I suspect the same for WCBS-TV; isn't that from the Empire State Building?

Yes. 45 kilowatts, vs. 100kw normally authorized for channel 2 stations whose antennas are 300 meters (1,000') or less high.

You certainly did pick up Today's TMJ4.

Were you watching via cable, rooftop antenna or indoor antenna? If it's cable then the headend is picking up the WBZ-TV signal OTA.

As for distance, I got WMT-TV (now KGAN-2) from Cedar Rapids when I lived on Long Island.

I have actually picked up several DX stations under our local WBZ on Channel 4 while living in Stoughton, MA. I picked up WTMJ "Today's TMJ" a few years ago. Also got WCCO from Minneapolis, WTTV from Indianapolis and KMOX from St. Louis. Basically they were "floaters" under 'BZ, but their CG "bugs" and logos were very recognizable. Same thing happened in 1980 on Channel 2. During that big DX summer, I was able to get ID's, floating under local WGBH. Got a nice QSL letter from South Dakota Public Television when I picked up KUSD-TV from Vermillion, SD. Saw their ID slate with their multi-station network call letters.

Indoor antenna, but I'm on the 3rd floor.
