WTMP Tampa is History

This is very sad. The AM/FM combo flipped to Spanish. WTCY Harrisburg, WILD-AM Boston (which slowly was put out to pasture over several years), still no true urban in Pittsburgh and now WTMP, more than 50 years in the format, apparently, gone.

More info about WTMP on its Wikipedia page:

My problem is this why Did "Dr." Cherry Jeopardize This Cultural institution. I pains me that No wealthy members of the black community, step up to the plate to buy the station to keep on keepin on... have we as a culture basically given up??? Black stations are disappearing nation wide
with out black radio we have no local voice our business have no marketable presence. This Issue effects us all. Now Can we get a new license
and a new physical Plant???

The Cherry brothers might very well be victims of a bad loan. But its also likely that they got too ambitious too quickly, or lacking a long-term plan besides 'existing'. Going up against the likes of Clear Channel, CBS, etc with inferior sticks and super tight budgets limiting your actions usually gets you trounced, even if you have some measure of heritage status in the market like WTMP did.

WTMP was indeed a great radio station, an institution in Tampa. During the last couple of hours prior to its mid-day switch to Spanish language, WTMP ran a very classy farewell announcement, which has been posted as an audio clip on Radio Years.com. It is listed as "WTMP - Format flip to Spanish - 2011". You can also find a station bio on the Radio Years website.

Following is a link to the WTMP Farewell Announcement audio clip:

??? the only way this format may be able to survive is for the AC format/HOT AC format to play some weekday/weekend syndicated programming (example: "The Doug Banks Show" AURN.COM and "Cafe Mocha"-Superadio.com)
It might not make sense, but it's the thought that counts.

Look!!, back in the day (The station is now Clear Channel "KISS 108") in Boston. Back in the 80s, most of what they played is today, known to us as (Urban AC Oldschool) Rick James, Grace Jones, Mary Jane Girls, Fivestar....<<<Back in the day,
KISS 108 used to play that music until 1989. They are currently CHR Format.

So, maybe AC/HOT AC formats can play some of those Urban AC shows?
