WTMT- The Mountain

There's an interesting discussion going on the Citizen-Times message board about the new station. Of course, the main topic of discussion there is that Ed Seeger is Satan, and corporate radio is awful. Somebody asked the hypothetical question "Why were Ed Seeger and his cronies given another frequency? Who was paid off under the table?" I'd sworn off the newspaper message board months ago, mainly because the loony socialist wackos who post there make me so angry my blood boils. Of course, though, I couldn't resist jumping back in when the topic at hand is radio, right? This should be fun :)

Oh, and as for standards, it'd be a genius idea for Asheville, and 1350 would be the perfect place for it, particularly considering that Montreat and the Swannanoa Valley have high concentrations of retirees.

One more thing, Spruce Pine is WTOE. Don'tcha hate nit-pickers? It's okay though...I bought your lunch a few weeks ago, so I can pick, right? :p

How about posting a link to that Citizen-Times Board?

You're funny... ;D Hey, it's prounounced the same way -- "toe" or "tow" . Now, I need to buy your lunch when you're down this way!

Oh, about the discussion going on at the Citizen-Times forum...could this be stirring up bad memories from the WZLS demise? IE, "they've been given another frequency"?

WTMT missed a great chance for a Hot AC leaning rock.

As for standards, if you'll look at 1310 Big Wise, when they played the standards they had better ratings.

From the Toe River that runs in the area?

Robyn

You are correct, Robyn! In fact, the Toe runs right alongside the RR tracks through downtown Spruce Pine.

Not just that, but they made good money, too.

I used to really enjoy listening to them with standards, sports....just not my cup of tea.Wish my local station(WHBK) would flip to standards, its sad when you cant even listen to your only real local station.

It's only sadder than that when you can't pick up your local station 2 miles out of town or being bombarded by Spanish over the top!

OK Folks...so let's go with this discussion...why the heck standards? DO THE MATH!!!

If you're retiring at 65...what was your music 45 years ago. Let's see....uh...that would be 1962...the early days of Rock n Roll...

At the very least...if you're trying to reach this demo...you would program True Oldies. If you want to skew a little younger...that would be 60's and 70's....

Standards is for people who listen to music that is pre rock n roll....they are pretty much dead now!

TK

I ain't dead and I ain't 65 and I still enjoy hearing some Frank Sinatra, Bing, Andy Williams etc every now and then...During my tenure on the air as most, I was forced several times to play "Beautiful Music, Standards, God forbid even Country" and sooner or later it grows on you. Beats the Hell out of hearing "Stairway to Heaven, Layla, McArthur Park, 10 times a week! (Or day)

The "Standards" debate...

My age is not in this format's demo--I'm 39 years old--but if I like this format, does that mean everyone else my age hates it? And, I liked the standards format even before the satellite formats "moderned" it up a few years ago. I like to hear the Carpenters, Lou Rawls, Tony Bennett, and Sinatra, too.

And while this isn't "standards", I have a 20-year-old niece who has loved oldies for many, many years(50s & 60s stuff). She was heartbroken when Magic 96.1 flipped to "The Beat". She loves Elvis, but was born 10 years after he died. I really don't know of anyone who listens to a particular type of music ALL of the time...I think one format gets a little stale after while; you flip the station and that one gets stale after a while; you flip again, and so on.

Hey that would be great if most of the listening audience had your same taste...but that's just not the case.
And standards is certainly not a big enough draw to garner a decent listening audience for a radio station in Asheville.

Has anybody ever tried it? Seems to me after making a trip up to Asheville, Boone, Cherokee etc, I saw a hellava lot of Florida license plates and a lot of old-timers taking pictures (and Geritol)..so what do the demo's show?.. I'm sure they don't include these people, but who are they showing..Boones, Appl State Population or what?

Sorry TK, I think you are way off base here. I lived and worked in the single most screwed up market on the planet - Asheville. Standards is EXACTLY what the area needs right now (and for the past 3 years). BUT keep in mind the mutation of standards these days would include a whole new genre. I know for a FACT there is a listening audience for that format. AND many of them are business owners just chomping at the bit to hear something other than the same old recycled crap coming out of that "tourist attraction" town.

There is a market here in Asheville for standards.

I've seen it work in Hendersonville and in Asheville.

The money demo saddly is 18-34.
