WTMT- The Mountain

vchimpanzee.....sadly enough, no one cares about the upper demos anymore! If anything, 1350 should go standards. I personally like standards, but no one with a nice FM signal will do it.
I spent the week in the mountains and had a good signal with 1400 The Peak where I was. Unfortuantely, that doesn't help everyone.

I tried The Mountain and all I have to say is: why does Asheville need three classic rock stations?

I know what you'll say. But the only "new rock" I heard was in the samples of what the station plays.

The Peak is the only station of any real value. I did listen to Kiss Country Classics on Sunday, because for some odd reason The Peak was doing a talk show.

Sorry TK, I think you are way off base here. I lived and worked in the single most screwed up market on the planet - Asheville. Standards is EXACTLY what the area needs right now (and for the past 3 years). BUT keep in mind the mutation of standards these days would include a whole new genre. I know for a FACT there is a listening audience for that format. AND many of them are business owners just chomping at the bit to hear something other than the same old recycled crap coming out of that "tourist attraction" town.

I'm off base? A Great Oldies station would be for the baby boomers....WOXL had em and lost em!
But a Standards station is for the baby boomers parents!

Good luck selling the upper demos to a very small portion of the audience. The pie just isn't big enough for this format folks! Polka would be just as effective....

Well, here's my 2 cents worth.

If you're gonna play rock and go after the 25-29 demo, why wouldn't you pick the brains of some of the talent on your staff that worked at the old Kiss FM and make The Mountain a Kiss clone? You couldn't call it that (of course), but the reverb in the audio chain and the "bigger than life" sound could be mimicked. Plus, you would be unique on the air. That was always what the old Kiss had going for it...no other CHR/Rock station of that era had their sound and presentation. Some local "attitude" radio (without the sleaze) would play well in Buncombe County again. Wonder why they won't let Chuck Finley have a shot at that? He knows the market (heck, he's worked in it for over 20 years) and he was part of the Kiss FM heyday. If we're gonna dream, bring back John Stevens, Dawn, GT, Pat Garrett and the rest of the gang. I know Saga won't go that far, but they could get the sound right for sure...and they already have 1/2 of the Kiss Wake-Up Crew on their staff.

However, I think I read on the board a while back that Chuck was leaving WOXL (or being asked to leave), but he is still on their Website. So what do you think? Give him a shot, and he "should" be able to take down 104.9 and maybe even eat into Star 104.3's numbers a bit.

(Disclaimer...I don't keep in touch with Chuck personally, but I always liked his and John Stevens' work on-air. They were tight, funny and relevant to what was happening in Western North Carolina at the time. We worked together for a bit while I was at Kiss in 1985, and Chuck always made fun of me because I had come from WTOE in Spruce Pine (but he neglected to mention on-air that he was a 'TOE alumnus also. I left to go back to a full-time gig at WTOE in November of that year. Chuck left for a gig in Memphis (I believe) not long after I went to work at Kiss and was replaced by Kent Compton, who drove into Asheville to do the show with John from Spartanburg every day.)

I agree. Why would anyone even program a radio statio without talking to people that have been in the market for 20 years or more is beyond me.. Once again it's the arrogance of people who think they know everything. Kiss-FM was probably the best top 40 station in the region. Great sound, great music and great personalities.

Chuck Finley has been given limited part time work. It was that or leave. What a shame. They think he's too old for "The Mountain". Hell, he's played the music most of his career. I don't thinl anyone would know it better than him. I don't understand. I'm like you, wouldn't it be great to put him and John Stevens back together again? I know, dream on. Bring back the whole staff.

Chuck made fun of everyone, but he did it in a fun way. He also made fun of himself. It's a shame to see him treated this way, what a waste.

You're right Chuck did start out at WTOE in Spruce Pine, he used to call himself "The hang nail on Toe radio"
I'll never understand Saga.

Chuck's picture is still on the web site, so is John Donovan's who left to go to TN.
Maybe one day Saga will wise up and bring Chuck back and let him do his thing.

I know 'dream on'.

So where is Chuck now?

Where did John Donovan go in Tennessee?

Contrary to popular belief, Chuck was not part of the original Sept. 84 bunch on KISS-FM. He was still at WCOS in Columbia at that time. It was Spring 85 before he arrived!

Chuck is doing 7 till midnight on Saturday night, and noon til 3 on Sunday. What a waste.

John Donavon went to some small town outside Knoxville. Another loss.

If you like the Mountain, check out the Hog..... http://www.1029thehog.com/.

It's owned by Saga also. Talk about cookie cutter format. The music and programming

is being done in Milwaukee and Connetticut. So much for local.

"Everything That Rocks" is Branded by Saga... Like the poster said look at the play list and you will see that it is the same!!! As for a retake of Kiss that would be a dream come true for a lot of Western NC/SC listeners... Kiss was a CHR station way ahead of its time... What John Stevens and company put together was one of the biggest success stories IMO to ever hit the Carolina's... It was just to bad that black Friday in 1986 had to take place when Kiss was sold... That was when Kiss went to hell in a hand bag... Before RI changed formats John Stevens told the story of the slow death of Kiss as well as all the fun and crazy stuff they did... Had it been left alone and not sold back in the eighties Kiss would still be an awesome CHR Power house, but that is a story we will never know... As for Chuck and John they had one of the best morning shows in the Carolina's at the time... When ever they were on their game they could not be stopped... Ok now I will wake up and remember I am in Northern IL where we have 20 below zero winters... CC1

;D How about MOUNTAIN and "Mississppi Queen? Haven't heard that in ages!!! APE

Remember Brother Bill? He sure pushed the envelope, "Official Chicken Buster", Talked about WANS 107.3- he called it the "A-nus" That's what I'd like to hear again. I heard him make fun of a phoner that called in from "the Dixie Rubber plant" in Greenville SC.....That guy was fun to hear, you just didn't know what was next!!! ;D

Man Brother Bill was always fun to talk to on ham radio as well... There always was a group of us who would meet on 145.150 located near Tryon and man he was a hoot weather it was HF or 2 meters we all had a blast... CC1

I worked with Brother Bill...you're right, he was great.
Maybe before his time. Ask him and Chuck and John if they remember
working in the control room at Kiss-Fm without a window and when it snowed and the wind
blew, it came into the studio.
Miss the good old days.

Carroll, you can still get Brother Bill on the ham bands. I think he is on 40 or 80 Meters some at night, but still gets on 2 meters every morning. 147.285, I think. Drop him an email. It's his callsign @arrl.net. I can't remember his call though. I know he would love to hear from you. Very personable. He was on Sat's and and Sun's for over 10 years until recently on 99.9!! Ops Mgr. somewhere in Greenville now..I think?

Once I get my 40M and 80M antennas up I may have to see if I can work him... At night on 40 that should be no problem, but during the summer on 80M that could be a whole different ball game... 73 DE Carroll KT4SJ live from Rockford IL where we are in the land that time forgot... CC1

I finally heard WTMT for the first time last night, and I was surprised that the signal isn't stronger than it is. Driving in on I-40, the station was too staticky to listen to in Canton. The stereo indicator finally came on in Candler, but the station still had a bit of static, mulitpath was my guess, the entire time I listened. I didn't go into downtown, but rather exited I-40 at "dysfunction junction" and drove south on I-26. However, this area sees the majority of traffic in Asheville these days, and I would have expected a perfect signal there, and didn't get one. Maybe it's just my receiver, but I got all the other Asheville stations perfectly there.

However, despite the annoying multipath static, I enjoyed the programming.

Has anyone heard that Lex and Terry are coming to The Mountain? Matt Stone is the new program director, coming the first of August. Does anyone know anything about him? Already in is the mid day girl. Ashley from Ill.
Should be interesting when they get the staff on the air.

They are already running commercials. Started the 16th.
