WTMX format tweak

This is similar to what I just posted on the Hot/Modern AC board:

In a trend that has been seen in other markets with their Hot AC stations, The Mix earlier this year underwent a bit of format tweak (without any fanfare), and started incorporating more rhythmic product into their playlist. Artists like Rihanna, Shakira, Christina Aguilera and Justin Timberlake have either been played for the first time, or as in Christina's case, more often. Existing Mix artists like Pink and Madonna have also seen a spike in airplay this year as well

So this begs the question. Is this the beginning of a trend that will allow for more rhythmic artists to earn more airplay on the national Hot AC chart, or will the fairly sizable number of stations that are more in line with the Modern AC format continue to dictate what songs rule the chart. I personally believe it is time for an official relaunch of the Modern AC format. If this were to occur, those Modern AC stations should not be allowed to report to the existing Hot AC panel. This would leave a fresher sounding Hot AC format, similar to what is heard on Canadian Hot AC stations.

In short, this fresher sounding Hot AC format would sound more like an authentic Adult CHR, where songs of several genres have an equal shot of earning an extended run on the charts. This is already happening on the Mix, where Rihanna's "SOS", and Christina's "Ain't No Other Man" have already far outperformed their performance on the national Hot AC chart (although in fairness, both songs peaked at #17 and #19 respectively, which is decent, but not great). As usual, only time will tell if this scenerio actually plays out, nationally, but locally, the addition of more rhythmic product has already greatly improved the sound and variety of the Mix, hopefully for years to come.

It's a trend more in AC radio overall. AC and Hot AC formats are finally realizing that the majority of the top hits in the last 3-4 years are rhythmic hits. Plus research is showing that the listeners are following this trend and respond well to more rhythmic tracks. That's why we're seeing "Movin'" formats and more rhythm put into AC formats.
