1280 does so well anywhere along a salt water path. See, with an AM station, the tower is only half the antenna. The other half is the earth or ground plane. Since salt water is so conductive, the signal really does well from the City Island location which is located right on the bayfront. This stations ground is either in the salt water or right next to it. Try an experiment. Next time you drive out to the beach, tune in 1600 on your AM radio. You will easily receive Key West with a very listenable signal. Also 870 in New Orleans comes in at the beach too. These are prime examples of a salt water path. If you are too close to St. Pete, you will get too much slop from WRXB 1590 which is in South St Pete, or slop from 860. The best salt water path is 530 AM. Tune in anytime day or nite and you will hear the Turks and Caicos Islands. So, hopefully that explains why such a small signal can go a long way when over salt water. It was a good move for WTMY to diplex with 1450. The effective signal is about as good as before. Out east, its not as good
