WTMY?

Gee, let's add another post about WTMY-- a station that doesn't show up on my radar until someone starts yet another post about it.

Why..I remember when WTMY was ROCKIN' as WYND. Carl Strandell was the PD, and I have NEVER heard a louder, more compressed radio station..It was SQUASHED..they must have sped thier songs up to 47rpm, and it was LOUD as hell..

These days you youngsters don't remember the really good stuff. I want to go back to the Old Heidelburg Castle for some Schnitzel and to hear the Bavarian Tyrolean Show Band. Where's my walker?

NURSE! There is a hooligan at the back door..tell him to go away...Wait..that's Frank Ferrari..okay let him in, but tell him to stay away from the strawberry shortcake in the fridge.

When I was @ WYND - 1280 back in the early 70's the turntables were actually set @ 47 and 48 rpm.. Talk about compression... the mod meter never seemed to drop below 100 % mod.. ever.. or someone got a call if over 3 sec.... that old 500 watt gates was peaked out for sure... probably needed to rest at night after being overworked during the day...

That transmitter did always sound louder than WKXY. Dave Allinson said they recorded all music to cart through a DBX 118 compressor then ran into a sped up CBS Audiomax and Volumax. What a sound! That transmitter was saved by Roger Hough former WDGY Chief now living in Naples and it is being restored as a Ham unit. BTW whatever happen to Jimmy Michaels?

I guess it's okay to "let it slip" now..back in the early 80's 1250-WDAE had the WILDEST processing system I had ever seen..Now you techies..follow this:

From the console half of the signal went to an ORBAN Stereo Reverb unit..Channel one fed Channel two so one reverb output fed the second one..so the reverb trail was really long..THEN the REVERB ONLY signal was fed to one channel of a SHURE MIXER.

THEN the other half of the split from the console went to ANOTHER splitter..this time three ways.

There were 3 Urei Graphic equalizers..one with the HIGHS accented..one with MIDS accented and one with the LOWS accented..each of the UREI EQs fed a separate CBS Audimax III..so there were three of each component.

The output of the Audimaxes fed one of the three remaining channels in the SHURE mixer..so the processing could be adjusted for each frequency range AND the amount of reverb desired.

It was a makeshift Dorrough with much better separate components..that station sounded just spectacular.

Jim Loupas was the CE, and he had some great ears. Even Dr. Frank Berry would agree.

After TAFT took over Rounsaville..they used the same system but replaced the Audimaxes with UREI LA3A's..and went to a carting system that sported another LA3a..and a little spectrum analyzer that Randy Michaels and Ted Russetti calculated the best curve for AM. USing ANOTHER Urei EQ we "moulded" each record to that curve as it was being carted.

THAT was fun radio!

I heard probably the best segment of talk radio I have ever heard yesterday on Sherman Baldwin's show. Was it on a big 50k station in a major market. The answer was no. It was on a little 500w station easily to dismiss as a non-player - WTMY! Sherman Baldwin rules the airwaves in the 73rd market. Watch out big boys!!!

I'm about 4 blocks from the Tampa bay, on the fringes of downtown St. Pete and now that WTMY has reduced their power (100 watts day / 80 watts night?)......... BUT are temporarily operating from City Island Sarsota at the WSDV tower site; I receive them much clearer due to the better grounding and salt water path and they are listenable day and night, even indoors.

I have to admit, I'm not a big on talk radio, but the small amount of time I listened, I was impressed. Now, 10 years ago, I would not have been impressed, but considering what else is on talk radio these days; the local shows I've heard on WTMY are a refreshing change.

If and when they return to a more inland, less well grounded location, they will once again become listenable during the day here.

I meant to say, that once WTMY goes back to an inland location; they will once again be listenable during the day; but lost in the other signals from co-channels at night; I hope they stay on City Island as long as possible.

Hey Talk Fanatic - I was going to say the exact thing about this afternoon's show. This is wild! Some of the best radio I have ever heard and on a tiny little station!!! Knock me down with a feather.
