WTNI/1640

Just wondering...

In the wake of the destruction on the Coast, is WTNI/1640 Biloxi running daytime power at night?

I ask only because -- gosh -- they sure have been strong up here in Memphis the last few nights, stronger than one usually expects to hear them. Of course, there could be other factors afoot -- the change of seasons brings better conditions for long-distance low frequency paths, etc. Plus, often, those extended band stations seem to get great skywave, since the frequencies tend to be clearer at night.

I also wonder why the only news/talk on the Coast is running parallel to its Classic Country cousin "Hank FM."

No biggie... just wondering.

Our studios were gutted...took on serious water with Katrina after our roof was basically destroyed. New equipment was shipped in, and wham---more water with Rita. The WTNI studios are being rushed to completion, and will be back up solo this Monday (10/3)...

I remember working with Bob Fonda trying to get the old 57 WVMI prepared back in 1992 as Hurricane Andrew was drawing a bead on the MS coast, before turning west into south Louisiana... The thoughts and prayers of a lot of people are with you guys on the Coast, Wayne. Good luck!

Re: WTNI/1640 & WVMI

I heard a little of WTNI the night of the Hurricane here in Rankin county but lost it. How long was it off the air? What other stations are off the air on the coast? I've always wondered why they moved to 1640, it looks like 570 would have been a better spot.

570 would have been a better spot if the signal wasn't directional. There were lots of places where you couldn't hear WVMI at night on the coast. Expanded band stations are supposed to be non-directional even at night, and while I haven't been to the coast since they changed frequencies, I would suppose they have a far superior signal on 1640.

Actually, there is another News/Talk outlet on the coast that has been on the air since the week after Katrina. While they are in Pascagoula, They have a directional signal that covers all of the MS Gulf Coast.

They have very few resources, but have been covering Jackson County better than any other media outlet on the coast.

The station is WPMP AM 1580. They run the JT and Dave show, Dave Ramsey, Conference Call, as well as a number of program from USA Radio Network. Plus, they have one of the few local morning shows left on the coast. Very small staff, old building and equipment, a real dump but they are holding their own!!!

FYI

Oh, I know WPMP very well -- at least in its previous incarnation. DE worked there in the early 80s, while in High School. Was there when the guys from Baton Rouge bought it, and took the FM to country.

I see there are still in the old building on Telephone Road. Gosh, that's sad. Last time I was in the city of the Singing River, I drive past the bulding. Windows were boarded up, tall weeds grew in the yard, and the building seemed to be in serious need of repair. It was comparable to a stereotypical haunted house, fitting, one might argue, since many years ago, that building was a funeral home. Those who have worked there have sometimes reprted odd sounds at night, most often from the small upstairs area.

I understand the building took some significant storm damage, and the towers took some salt water. I hope that has been addressed.

Glad to see the station back on the air! All three Pascagoula/Moss Point FMs have moved, so some degree of locality is a good thing. Interesting they brought back the old calls when they converted from the CCM format.

I worked at PMO/PMP back in '85, the year Hurricane Elena hit and trashed my apartment. I did remote broadcasts from Jackson County Civil Defense headquarters for much of the duration (we had a Marti set up there, along with two turntables and a cart machine!), and thought sure once I returned following the storm, there'd be nothing left of the old funeral home. Wrong! It was still intact. I remember they went through two or three 50-thousand watt generators before getting one that stayed running. 'PMO was the only station on the Coast that stayed on the air during Elena, and we gained quite a windfall of listeners because of it.

I have also wondered why the move was made to 1640 from 570.
At least from my perspective, visiting my relatives in Diamondhead, 570 blasted through loud and clear in the old days. The 1640 signal is relatively weak in Diamondhead/Bay St. Louis. Or is Diamondhead in a null?

No null to be in. It's non-directional.

They would have taken me kicking and screaming from 570 to 1640. Heck, another 60 kc, and you're in a ham band!

But, maybe they allowed the move (the FCC proposed it, not them) for simplicity -- short tower (1/4 wave is only ~163'), no DA. Or, maybe not.

Perhaps only YOU catch the true irony here, Rob.
